Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Embark on a journey into a land bounded only by the imagination. No, it's not The Twilight Zone, it's Harold and the Purple Crayon, HBO's thoroughly enchanting, Emmy Award-winning animated series based on Crockett Johnson's cherished book. Van Dyke Parks's whimsical music and Sharon Stone's warm narration set the stage for each of Harold's bedtime adventures. As in the book, Harold's purple crayon transports him from his bedroom and away "from the long straight path" to explore wondrous landscapes in which anything is possible: In "Harold's Walk on the Wild Side," the little waif experiences life as one of a menagerie of animals; next, he tries out several grown-up professions in "Future Clock"; and "Fly Away Home" finds him achieving big things, even though he's as small as a bug. One of the most moving of the 13 episodes included here is "I Remember Goldie," a sensitive and reassuring story in which Harold comes to terms with his beloved goldfish's death. Harold and the Purple Crayon's majesty resides in its fidelity to the gentle spirit of Johnson's books. Harold may not talk, but one picture is worth a thousand words. With its ceaseless invention and nurturing of creative play, this series is suitable for framing.

    Unleash Imagination and Kindness

HBO stopped playing Harold and the Purple Crayon, and now I have to buy the DVD. My 2 year old son LOVES to watch Harold right before going to bed. This series is full of songs, imagination, manners, etc. And the stories always end with Harold going to bed... what better segway to get your own child to bed!
