For all but the most nitpicking Potter-philes out there, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is nothing less than the perfect visual incarnation of J.K. Rowling's world of swooping owls and flying broomsticks. However, it's never precisely more than that, either; the very act of giving image and voice to these rich literary precepts places them in a realm inevitably less magical than the imagination. Still, it's hard to picture a more essentially faithful adaptation of Rowling's tone and story, which weighs in at a hefty two and a half hours despite streamlining some of the more vestigial elements of a quick 300-page read. Steve Kloves' adaptation of the wildly popular bestseller lingers less on some of the episodic Hogwarts' adventures, only briefly touching on such red herring plot points as the wise centaur and Hagrid's dragon. The eye-popping visuals have numerous other opportunities to shine, chief among them the grippingly rendered Quidditch match, in which players on broomsticks zoom and jockey like the speeder bikes of Endor in Return of the Jedi. It's no surprise that Harry Potter should occasionally invoke a Star Wars movie, since its hero is an orphaned boy who yearns for a destiny beyond what his aunt and uncle can provide, and who possesses unparalleled mystical powers that the dark side seeks to corrupt. The landscape Chris Columbus and cinematographer John Seale have created with its levitating banquet hall decorations, animated games of wizard chess, ominous trolls, and three-headed dogs is of equal vividness and complexity as that galaxy far, far away, and it should make just as much if not more money. Besides the film's many technical achievements, the actors really deliver, well beyond the who's who of British thespians who comprise the Hogwarts' teachers. Daniel Radcliffe has the look and reluctant heroism of Harry down perfectly, if a little too languidly; he's bested by Emma Watson's deliciously petulant and precocious Hermione, as well as the masterful line deliveries and comic timing of Rupert Grint as Ron.

I received this set as a Christmas gift and found one scratched disk that would not play at all. When we finally got a replacement we found that they put the "Special Features" disk in the package in place of the real Order of the Phoenix movie. Then customer service has the audacity to claim that this was their intention from the beginning.

I love the Harry Potter books, and really enjoyed the movies, that is why I was so excited to find an affordable collection of the first five years. The packaging is great, doesn't take up a lot of space and the movies arrived in good condition. The biggest problem and disappointment I had was, after I got the DVDs I immediately started watching them. Year one through four played great and there were no problems, but when I got to year five DVD, it was not the movie just the special features for the movie. No movie...I was very disappointed, I guess I should have checked the box when I first got the set, because by the time I realize that the fifth DVD was not the movie; the time to return or exchange had passed and Barns and Nobles could not help me. Not sure if this was just a fluke or what, but I am not happy with the customer service that was provided for me.

I see that I'm not the only person who did not receive the fifth movie disc but instead, only select scenes, and the time has expired to return. I would not recommend purchasing since others have been taken advantage of as well. While the movies I did receive were fine, the fact that you don't receive what you ordered rates the overall product low.

I ordered the set in January and vowed not to watch "OOTP" until I was just about to see "Half Blood Prince" in the theater. Since I'll be seeing "HBP" tomorrow, I just opened my box set, excited to settle in and watch "OOTP" for the very first time. Instead of the movie in the "Phoenix" case, I received the Special Features disc only. No movie at all! If you're thinking of ordering this set, open it right away and make sure you have all the movies and haven't been gypped out of any of them. Hindsight being 20/20 as they say, I probably should have opened the package when I first got it. Que sera sera. I'll know better for next time.

I was so happy to find this collection. Every movie to date in 1 box,and widescreen to boot! If you don't have these movies, this is the perfect set! Harry Potter and company is addictive to young and old. These movies are a visual delight, and the stories are captivating.

The movies are fine accept that don't have any documentaries or interviews with the cast, so if you interested those you would have to be the 2-disc sets for each film

this is a great set of movies for the price. i had read some other reviews saying that the fifth movie wasn't included just the special features disc so i was hesitant to buy it but i got all five movies. this is a great product.

As this is a review for the DVD Blu-Ray Box Set for Harry Potter (Years 1-5) I will not comment in length on the series or the books themselves. I will say however that the Harry Potter series is quite possibly one of the most important pieces of fictional literature to come out in the past 20 years. It has changed many lives and provides an engaging narrative that is humorous, charmful, magical, and also not afraid to explore the darker side of it's material. The Box Set for Harry Potter comes with all 5 Blu-Ray DVD's, individually packaged within the box. There are also 5 collectible bookmarks that I reccommend one doesn't use as they are much better for display. There are 12 collectible trading cards, which come packaged in a replica of the letter Harry gets from Hogwarts telling him of his acceptance to the school; I felt this was a very nice touch on the manufacturer. Lastly, there is an interactive DVD which is great for the younger children and also a Bonus DVD with several obligatory making of featurettes. All this comes packaged in a faux-leather type box, which while not the sturdiest of boxes it is visually appealing none the less. Harry Potter is an amazing series, incomparable and undefinable in it's wonder, it continually amazes me and makes me smile when I think of the series. It provides escapism into a ficitional world that one envies and wishes could be true, and provides people of all ages a thought provoking storyline that will be remembered by generations to come.

The first was decent, second sad, third marginally better than the second, forth good, & fifth was absolutely phenomenally done... it was brilliant to keep David Yates as director for the final three rather than continiuing to swap.

I purchased the DVD collection on 12/25/2008 & received my notification that the shipment would be expected in 5-7 days. No other email was received stating that there was a delay in the box set & that delivery would not be for a month later, 01/24/2009, which was well after the purpose I purchased.

After receiving the videos, at the first opportunity which was 10 days later, we immediately skipped to Disc 5- "The Order of the Phoenix". This is where the real problem started. Disc 5 did NOT contain the actual movie, but the Special Features DVD. Disappointed by this, nevertheless we decided to watch the rest of the movies so we could verify that only Disc 5 needed to be returned. Out of 5 Discs, 3 were DEFECTIVE. I immediately called B&N customer service, where I was told that they would send out a mailer & replace the DVD's at no cost, however the turn around time was another 2 weeks. I was able to convince the local store to let me return the DVD set there. After a huge fiasco of un-trained employees returning my set & not giving me a receipt for the return, just handwriting that they accepted it on that date, I returned home with a new set of DVD's.

Once again, upon opening Disc 5 it was Special Features ONLY! Now I had already made sure that the box set was supposed to contain a movie, not just the special features. We went through the DVD's again & the same 3 were DEFECTIVE.

I went back to the local store to return the box set, where I was given the Third Degree about why their employees did not give me a receipt, just a handwritten note & why I was returning it AGAIN. After speaking with a Manager, who opened 2 more sets- WHICH HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS, they agreed to refund my card for the purchase. Only after, mind you, that she gave me the spiel about Copyright laws & how they shouldn't do this at all. I did not get the product of which I paid for, but was refunded after a lot of time & effort.

This is exactly the set for someone who just wants to watch the movies, and is not interested in extras. We've got Harry Potter games which my son is more inclined to spend time on rather than out-takes, deleted scenes, etc. My son was so excited to be able to watch all the Harry Potter movies at home before going to see the Half Blood Prince.

Lost my originals in Hurricanes Katrina & Rita and finally after 4 years was able to afford to replace them. I really like the container it came in, but it was a little warpped.
