Overview

An unstable Gulf War veteran with a savior complex receives a shocking wake-up call upon returning stateside and accepting a position with the Department of Homeland Security in the directorial debut of Training Day screenwriter David Ayer. Jim Christian Bale is a Gulf War veteran who believes his sworn duty to protect his fellow Americans extends to the streets of Los Angeles, and he longs to fulfill his destiny by joining the LAPD. Rejected by the force and left to ponder his future with his impoverished Mexican paramour -- whom he had intended on bringing to the city after joining the police -- the dejected and unemployed veteran is offered a second shot at helping his country when he is subsequently approached by the Department of Homeland Security. As Jim and his unemployed best friend, Mike Freddy Rodriguez, carve a swath of chaos through the streets of Los Angeles, the weight of their American dream soon comes crashing down in a devastating blow that threatens to dash their high hopes for a bright future.

    Excellent movie !!!

This movie is fantastic from start to finish. I don't know why more people haven't given it positive reviews. Christian Bale and Freddy Rodriguez are perfect in this movie. Their chemistry is brilliant. No kidding, I have watched it at least 20 times and will most likely never get tired of it. I even bought the cool soundtrack to the movie. Don't listen to negative reviews, just listen to mine ! Every scene is pertinent and the dialogue is hilarious even though the movie is serious. It's fun watching these guys cruise around LA doing everything they shouldn't be doing.

    A reviewer

Poor. Terrible. Pathetic. There aren't too many adjectives this inefficiently made movie deserves. It swerves from absolutely irrational to slightly crazy. By the way, where were the cops in the whole film? Drinking open beers and shooting people everywhere, I don't expect much of LAPD, but these are new lows.

    Turgid Stuff, This

While no one would fault a writer/director from wanting to depict just how low life can descend, making a film script that is three-quarters repeated expletives and tiresome current slang terms ('dude', 'dog' etc in place of names) wears thin after the first half hour of HARSH TIMES. One wonders if David Ayer wanted to creat the feeling in the theater (or living room!) just with the tenor of the film. The story is so minimal that it needn't be summarized other than to say it is the downward spiral of an ex-army man (Christian Bale) and a wishy-washy burned out failure (Freddy Rodriguez) as they ignore the needs of the women who care about them (a strong Eva Longoria) and choose instead to drink, smoke pot, and act like bad children. The cast is a strong one - in search of a script that means something - but even Christian Bale and Freddy Rodriguez can't rescue this deflating balloon. It is just a sad film all the way around.
