Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
Similar to its Adult Swim cartoon cousin Space Ghost, Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law revives the '60s superhero from the Hanna-Barbera universe and plunks him into new, postmodern situations. Birdman -- full name Harvey Birdman -- stars as an attorney defending fellow H-B animated creations such as Fred Flintstone, Yogi Bear, and the Apache Chief from The Superfriends in courts of law. Hilariously subversive, featuring clever in-jokes and earnest voice performances from Gary Cole as the title character and comedian Stephen Colbert as his boss, Harvey Birdman is easily the best offering on the entire Adult Swim block of programming. In Season 1's 13 episodes, for instance, Harvey is tasked with aiding Dr. Benton Quest (from Johnny Quest) gain custody of Johnny and Hadji from his "partner" Race Bannon in "Bannon Custody Battle"; in "Death by Chocolate," he defends Boo Boo Bear (The Yogi Bear Show) from claims that he is, in fact, the mad bomber "Unabooboo"; and in "Shaggy Busted," Shaggy (Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?) is accused of being in possession of a suspicious substance due to his constant giggling and frequent trips for munchies. The two-disc set contains deleted scenes, pencil tests, animatics, live-action spots, and commentaries, the best of which is the offering by representatives of Turner Broadcasting's Standards and Practices and Legal Departments on "The Devlin Made Me Do It."
