Audio for Hatari! is presented in Dolby Digital Mono 1.0 and sounds distortion free, if a bit flat and hollow. The dialogue, music, and effects were all clear of distortion and hiss. A Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono French track is also included on this disc, as well as English subtitles. Sadly, the only extra feature available on this DVD is a theatrical trailer for Hatari!, and nothing more. Fans of John Wayne should be excited by this first-ever widescreen release of Hatari!, even if the supplements are a bit slim.

Produced on the heels of director Howard Hawks's "comeback" hit, Rio Bravo, this rollicking action-comedy proved to be one of his most charming and exhilarating adventures -- and one of the last truly great films he would make in a long and storied career. The plot itself is minimal, but the situations are pure Hawks: The story follows a group of professional big-game hunters through a single season, as they drive high-speed across the dusty African plains capturing wild animals for zoos and circuses around the world. John Wayne plays Sean Mercer, the gruff, romantically gun-shy leader, whose tight-knit group is turned upside down when a disarmingly beautiful wildlife photographer Elsa Martinelli arrives on the scene. Clocking in at 159 minutes, this is easily the longest film Hawks ever made, yet his control of its pacing is masterful. Hatari! drifts seamlessly between intense action scenes and moments of light comedy, never once faltering. The large ensemble cast is immensely likable, and the film's incredible safari sequences are among the most thrilling ever photographed -- the actors risked life and limb doing all their own animal wrangling, without the aid of camera tricks. Cleverly scripted by the brilliant Leigh Brackett The Big Sleep, Hatari! offers irresistible delights that are far too numerous to mention. But one would be remiss in neglecting to note the contributions of a waggish Red Buttons, and the buoyant score by Henry Mancini -- highlighted by his now-famous "Baby Elephant Walk."

Of the five movies that Howard Hawks made with John Wayne, the first three had running times of well over two hours, and Hatari! is the longest of them (as well as the longest movie Hawks ever made) at 158 minutes, which was something of a personal indulgence for director/producer Hawks. It never seems overlong, however, thanks to the presence of a top-flight cast who were obviously having the time of their lives professionally, and whose chemistry, coupled with the director's deft touch, draws the audience into their fun. John Wayne is at the top of his game here as an action hero, in the undemanding role of a two-fisted trapper of zoo and circus animals. Red Buttons, who had gone from being a popular comedic television personality to a serious actor over the previous five years (winning the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for Sayonara in 1957), is at his most appealing as a semi-comic co-star; and Elsa Martinelli became the latest in a long line of supremely confident and challenging Howard Hawks heroines, not up to the standard set by Angie Dickinson in Rio Bravo and Margaret Sheridan in The Thing, but still memorable in her ability to challenge Wayne's and Buttons' natural macho superiority. Mixing those three, plus Hardy Kruger and a solid supporting cast, into some of the most exciting action scenes of their era, made Hatari! virtually irresistible to audiences in the early '60s. The screenplay by Leigh Brackett isn't overlong in itself, but Hawks takes his time with it, stretching out every action scene and luxuriating in its details. Astonishingly, the public bought it, even though African adventure stories were just about out of style. Between the director's sure hand and the mix of comedy and action in the story, plus the charismatic presence of Wayne and company, Hatari! was a success for all concerned and, arguably, Hawks' last truly great and ambitious movie.

    one of my favorites

    Yes, it's long. And when I ask anyone in my family to watch it with me, I get groans of "I don't have enough time for that!" But if you have 3 hours to spare, it really is a wonderful movie! Lots of scenes really are not necessary, like a whole 5 minutes of ostriches chasing African men. But the scenes add so much charm to the movie! And how can you not be a John Wayne fan? He's an American movie icon! But him in Africa and he gets even better, believe it or not. Sure, there's a love story that has no real foundation and comes right out of the clear African sky, but again, it's charming!

    Hatari, great movie for families

    As a John Wayne fan, I could share it with my 6 year old grandson and we watched the movie with great joy. The plains of Africa, the animals and the story line were entertaining. We loved the music and the humor.
    The only negative was the smoking which allowed us time to talk about the hazards of smoking.
    Overall it was a great film

    One of the Best

    This is one of the first movies I remember seeing. Its my Favorite John Wayne movie and iv'e seen most of them because my dad loves classics. Everthing is great in this movie the characters settings everything!!

    Great

    I played the song, Baby Elephant Walk, in a summer band camp one year. I loved the song. One day, my mom came home with the movie. I loved it. I love most John Wayne movies. Except for the one where he kills the dog. Anyway, this movie is really funny. The female photographer just gets into fights with him. It just makes it more funny.

    One of the best John Wayne movies

    Hatari is a real delight for anyone who needs escape and a dose of adventure. John Wayne and cast provide smooth acting and fun situations. Its a great family movie with something for everyone. (and oh, those cute baby elephants!)

    Wonderful

    This is one of my favorite movies. It has everything you need from a movie in it. Where it was filmed was great, the way it was filmed is great. A wonderful movie.
