Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
"'Have Gun, Will Travel' reads the card of a man / A knight without armor in a savage land..." So begins the theme song of the late-'50s western series Have Gun Will Travel, starring the black-clad Richard Boone as Paladin, an educated West Point graduate and Civil War veteran who has settled in San Francisco as a gun for hire. From his base at the Hotel Carlton, Paladin scours the classifieds for ads that offer generous compensation in return for help -- and on occasion he also receives letters brought to him by Asian porter Hey Boy (Kam Tong). Wearing a custom-made pistol and holster stamped with his trademark, a silver chess-set knight, Paladin bags bad guys for cash. Always willing to fight for the underdog, he more often than not uses his wits before resorting to violence. The 39 episodes of the 1958-59 season can all be found on this six-disc set, including gems like "The Protégé," a morality tale that finds Paladin teaching a young man the ways of the gun, only to discover the kid likes it a little too much. "A Sense of Justice" finds Paladin offering his help to prevent the hanging of a mentally challenged man. And in "The Ballad of Oscar Wilde," Paladin is hired to protect the writer from kidnappers. Along with the set's extras, Have Gun Will Travel viewers will enjoy Season 2’s parade of guest stars, including screen greats Harry Carey Jr., Lon Chaney Jr., Charles Bronson, and Vincent Price, as well as future prime-time mainstays Denver Pyle (The Dukes of Hazzard), Suzanne Pleshette (Bob Newhart), Harry Morgan (M*A*S*H), and Morey Amsterdam (Dick Van Dyke).

A series that is not just an old typical western but had a classy twist with the main character in Paladine
