Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
While Have His Carcase takes some liberties with the Dorothy L. Sayers novel upon which it is based, only those who demand absolute fidelity in their adaptations are likely to be bothered by the changes. Besides, the film boasts some fine Cornish location shooting that adds to the viewer's enjoyment -- and to the all-important atmosphere of the story. Livelier than the previous Strong Poison (as the earlier film involved the possible execution of Harriet Vane, this is quite understandable), Carcase has some wonderful moments of near-contact between the soon-to-be lovers, moments that are used to full advantage by both Edward Petherbridge and Harriet Walter. There is a marvelous chemistry between the two, with Petherbridge's slight shyness and cordiality and Walter's cautiousness playing off each other to great effect. Petherbridge is also a master at letting the slightest quiver or the merest flicker reveal mountains. Rosemary Anne Sisson's screenplay maintains the wry humor that Sayers brought to her work, and she has a clear understanding of the characters -- a plus, as she has to sketch in character details amid the dense plotting. Christopher Hodson directs with style and keeps things moving at just the right pace, and makes good use of his supporting cast. All in all, Have His Carcase is a delight for classic crime buffs.
