Hawaii Five-0 - Season 1

Overview

Hawaii Five-0 has arrived on DVD in a deluxe first-season package that also includes the feature-length pilot, and a delightful extended bonus feature. Overview

Hawaii Five-0 has arrived on DVD in a deluxe first-season package that also includes the feature-length pilot, and a delightful extended bonus feature. The film-to-video transfers are superior to anything seen on the series in syndication, and the fact that these are the uncut shows makes the set appealing on several levels. Hawaii Five-0 went on the air just before television broadcasters, spurred by Congress, began one of their reconsiderations of the levels of violence that could be depicted on the air -- many of the shows were censored in their reruns and in their syndicated incarnations, and so haven't been seen intact in decades. One doesn't wish to seem to be espousing an appreciation of gratuitous violence, but at least here we have a chance to see the original and initial appeal of a series that ended up running for over a decade. The transfers look good enough, with only a few traces of darkening to the original stock that seems endemic to series television shot on 35mm in the 1960's and 1970's. The full-screen (1.33-to-1) images are bright and sharp, and give us some exceptional views of the Hawaiian landscape. Each episode gets broken down into chapters based on the original commercial slots. The audio is also good and loud, which gives full play to the theme music and the highly animated scoring by Morton Stevens. Each of the seven discs opens automatically to a multi-layered menu that offers individual episode access as well as a "play all" option. The two important bonus features are the original pilot, which had a very slightly different supporting cast, with Tim O'Kelly portraying Danny Williams (succeeded in the actual run of the show by James MacArthur). The movie plays like a second-rate spy film, except for the pacing, which was as brisk as anything seen in a weekly action series up to that time. Additionally, in trying to be contemporary at the time, and setting up a constant conflict between McGarrett as a cop and Nancy Kwan as a "hippie," it is dated today in ways that can make one wince comically. The actual series works somewhat better, for the most part. The other, equally important bonus feature, is the inclusion on Disc Seven of the 1996 Hawaiian television special Emme's Island Moments: Memories of Hawaii Five-0, which is co-hosted by James MacArthur and features extensive background o nthe series and the surviving cast and crew members -- there's a lot of good (and sometimes amazing) information here, and it's extremely entertaining as well, and the tributes to creator/producer Leonard Freeman and series star Jack Lord. At the time the series went into production in 1968, there were no professional film crews in Hawaii, and very few actors with any experience whatsoever -- Hawaii Five-0 changed all of that, mostly through the combined efforts of Freeman and Lord. Combined with the original pilot, this special makes the set worthwhile and, indeed, is almost worth the price of admission by itself for serious fans of the series.

    Hawaii Five-O First Season

When viewing old shows you grew up with they do not always age well. Saying that old TV shows are only for the TRUE FAN. I enjoyed this DVD; but I do not need Season 2 to forfill my fix.

    Takes me back

Back in "68" I was 12 years old. I thought that Jack Lord was the most handsome actor on TV. He's still handsome even though this lady is alot older now. The episodes are as well written and engaging as they were long ago. Add this to your collection, sit back with a warm drink, a good companion and make a night of it. You won't be sorry.

    A reviewer

I remember watching the series as a kid, and thinking that McGarrett was the epitome of a tough guy cop. I wasn't sure how the series would look almost 40 years later, but the quality of the writing and cinematography of the series still holds up very well. A must see if you are a fan of classic police drama. Che Fong rules........Gil Grissom drools

I am a fan of the crime shows.

We always watched Hawaii Five-O, when it was on television. I am glad they put in out on DVD. We are in the process of watching it now, when time allows, and are enjoying it. We are looking forward to Streets of San Francisco. We wish they would put out Judging AMY, and Nash Bridges.

    60's Television Show Fan

Having watched Hawaii Five-O on a "hit and miss" basis during its' original run, it is great to see it released on DVD. Picture and audio quality are superior. Episodes appear to be as originally broadcast, running approximately 51 minutes each. It brings back many good memories of interesting characters, fine acting and great script writing. Extra feature was well done and provided many interesting insights into the show. Anyone who was a fan of Hawaii Five-0 will enjoy this set. It should also go a long way in creating new fans. Looking forward to future seasons, which hopefully will be as well done
