Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Chas Turner
John Hughes minted the gold standard for '80s teen movies with such heartfelt profiles in angst as Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club. But when Heathers arrived in 1989, it heralded a new age. A black comedy with a brutally witty script by Daniel Waters and director Michael Lehmann, Heathers mixed satire, nihilism, and madcap horror into a bubbling, critic-pleasing brew. It also helped propel Winona Ryder to prominence, portraying Veronica, the offbeat outsider who joins the sadistic, school-ruling clique known as the Heathers Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, and Kim Walker only to grow intensely dissatisfied with their antics. Expelled from the group, she takes up with new kid, J. D. Christian Slater, channeling Jack Nicholson, whose misanthropy trumps even her own repulsion at phony adolescent hierarchies. Soon, Heather bodies begin piling up, Veronica realizes that J. D. is a homicidal maniac, and it's clear that teen movies will never be the same. A colorful pop paean to teen alienation, Heathers attacks the status obsession of American teens with glee -- a strain that informs such '90s hits as Clueless and American Beauty, as well as the poignant 2001 entry Ghost World. The DVD editions -- either the Limited Edition tin or the more conventional Special Edition -- sport audio commentary and "Swatch Dogs and Diet Coke Heads," a featurette, bearing the Heathers working title, that reunites the cast and crew. Also unearthed and presented for the first time -- alas, only in script form -- is the original ending with Veronica aiding rather than hindering J. D.'s final spree.
All Movie Guide
A more scathing and trenchant teen movie has rarely been made than Heathers. Packaged and sold as a film about a group of wanna-be Valley Girls, it turned out to be a deadly examination of cliques and teenage vengeance, a black comedy comparable in its own way to Lord of the Flies. Screenwriter Daniel Waters and writer-director Michael Lehmann took audiences by surprise with smart, telling dialogue and a diabolical plot. Playing the only member of an Ohio high school's ruling clique not named Heather, Winona Ryder did much to launch herself into stardom. The film also cemented the bad-girl reputation of TV star Shannen Doherty and featured Christian Slater in his first major starring role. Heathers was too dark to be as popular with mass audiences as it was with many viewers and critics.

    Good movie.

Heathers is a pretty good movie. It's got a nice story line to it, and the acting is well done. It's got your stereotypical dumb jocks, your depressed, obese teens, your clumsy nerds, and the preppy, popular girls that everyone wants to slaughter. Veronica is sick of the Heathers making fun of people and even though they're her friends, she wants them dead. They basically go on a killing spree of the Heathers and the two stupid football jocks and they cleverly write suicide notes that make sense to go along with their deaths to cover up their tracks. This is a pretty original movie that's well thought out and well written; props go to Michael Lehmann.

Sadistic satire will blow you away

This exagerated black comedy kept me yearning for more. The sattire is hilarious, especially if you grew up in the eighties. This film possesed my mind for many days the first time I saw it. We are all Veronica Sawer.

Mean Girls, eat your heart out!!!

This pitch-black comedy seems just like any adolescent comedy about the stuck up girls at school, and the new guy love intrest... Then the killings start. Not serial killings, no, Winona Rider and Christian Slater team up as a murderous duo, that set up murders as suicides. As more and more of the teens "off themselves," the story actually blends from a farce revolving around death, to a teenager perspective view on why actual teenagers commit suicide. But don't think for one second that this film is any less than 100% comedic farce, with comic releif around every turn. This is one wild ride that you will remember long after its over.

    Wowsville

This movie was really good. Christian Slater is unbelievably sexy and so is Winona Rider. I mean come on any movie that involves actors like them needs to be watched. The teen suicide and all the darkness about this movie was very entertaining.

    The best movie

This is one of the coolest teen movies around let me give you part of the storyline. Veronica Sawyer (Played by the brillant Winona Ryder) is sick of her new friends even though they are the most popular girls at Westerburg High she wishes they where dead that wish soon comes true when she meets JD(Christen Slater) a cool but phyicotic goth/rebal who decieds they can murder anyone who gives them a hard time until it all goes out of controll Heathers is a dark comedy of bad manners and and how to survive high school wich is pretty hard in this film This is a must see film my mark 10/10

    Not so fast.

This movie was marginal at best. While I did enjoy Wynonna Ryders performance, it seems to be her standard pseudo 'out of touch' teen role she's used for years. It's just a played out role with a few unique swists, who cares. Mr. Slater's performance was nothing to write home about either. The actors never made me believe what the director intended. While not a must have, this film does deliver some off tilt humor in a sorta black comedy way, but at the end of the day, I'm just not buying it.

    A TRUE BLACK COMEDY CLASSIC

I'VE SEEN THIS MOVIE FOR THE FIRST TIME, AND IT WAS BRILLANT. THIS IS A CHARMING TALE OF TEENS OUTSIDE THE OUTSKIRTS. WINONA RYDER AND CHRISTIAN SLATER ARE ABSOULTELY GREAT TOGETHER. THIS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST COMEDIES EVER MADE. I'M ASHAMED OF MYSELF FOR NOT SEEING IT BEFORE OR NOT HAVING IT ON THE LIMITED EDITION DVD. I TOTALLY RECOMMEND IT.

    My Favorite Movie!!

I absolutely love this movie!! It's a look at how scary a place highschool can be when you let others dicate your life. Winona Ryder is excellent in this movie, and it is a welcome change from all the melodramatic teen movies of its time.
