Overview

An ex-cop trying to stay away from trouble finds it literally crashing into his backyard in this crime thriller. Dave Robicheaux Alec Baldwin is a former New Orleans police detective who, after kicking an addiction to alcohol and confronting some serious problems with his partners, has left law enforcement behind to run a bait shop in a small Louisiana bayou town. One day, Dave and his wife Annie Kelly Lynch see a small plane plummet from the sky and crash into the swamp; the pilot dies, but Dave is able to rescue a young Hispanic girl from the wreckage. Dave and Annie take the child in, but as they try to find out more about the plane crash and who the little girl might be, they discover that she's actually an illegal alien from Salvador and that the pilot was involved with a local drug ring. Dave, constitutionally unable to let a mystery go unsolved, begins asking enough questions and making enough trouble that he finds himself on the bad side of his old High School friend Bubba Rocque Eric Roberts. Bubba is a local crime boss who controls the area's drug traffic, keeps a boxing ring in his front yard, and has a wife Claudette Teri Hatcher who enjoys greeting her guests naked. Dave's inquiries eventually become too much for Bubba and his henchmen, and in the midst of a violent raid on their home, Annie is killed. Dave becomes obsessed with bringing Bubba and his men to justice and gets some unexpected help from Robin Gaddis Mary Stuart Masterson, an exotic dancer with a heart of gold. While it was originally scheduled for release in 1994, Heaven's Prisoners didn't arrive on theater screens until two years later, by which time Teri Hatcher had risen to stardom on the TV series Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Not as Good as the Book

The Dave Robicheaux series of detective novels by James Lee Burke ranks among the finest detective fiction. Burke's protagonist, a New Orleans homicide detective who returns to his boyhood home to fight crime, spends alot of time soul searching and introspectively dealing with his alcoholism and his past. For that reason the novels are a challenge to bring to the screen and this DVD shows that.

This DVD is at its best when showing the lush Louisiana bayou country and the seamy underside of New Orleans. The cinematography is first rate. Not so the acting. Alec Baldwin is not a convincing Robicheaux and some of the villians are almost cartoonish. Two exceptions: Eric Roberts as the vain and conflicted Bubba Rocque plays his 'tormented villian' role well and Teri Hatcher as his slutty and manipulative 'desperate housewife' shows far more acting talent- and skin- than she does on television. Overall, the movie is quite watchable for Robicheaux fans and action sequences are generally done well. But to get the 'full experience', reading the book- all of the 'Robicheaux' books actually- is highly recommended.

A movie was also developed for 'In the Electric Mist', a later Robicheaux series novel. This DVD, with Tommy Lee Jones as a far more convincing Robicheaux and better performances throughout, is also highly recommended.

Imperfection with an excelent feel and flavour.

If every movie were perfect, if every script were flawless, if every actor were Humphrey Bogart and every actress were Lauren Becal, if every director were John Huston then what fun would there be on Oscar night? I am a `B¿ movie fan and this is a really fine example of a `B¿ detective movie. Plenty of action, plenty of beautiful scenery and people, a halfway decent plot, plenty of logical unpredictability, and it plays well on the small screen. It has more grit than ¿The Big Easy¿ and a fairly good cast. And it has an honesty that saves us from suffering through an ending with a dime store moral. This is a good movie for one of those evening when you have nothing else to do and no one special to do it with. So warm up the VCR/DVD, pop up a big bowl, dump on the butter and salt, pop the top on a cool one and enjoy.
