Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
Patricia Routledge, the beloved Hyacinth Bucket of Keeping Up Appearances, shows a distinctly different side as Hetty Wainthropp, a no-nonsense Lancashire housewife and enterprising sleuth. Hetty Wainthropp Investigates originally aired on BBC1 in the U.K. and became known in the U.S. through the PBS series Mystery! Episodes collected here include the series' 90-minute premiere, "The Bearded Lady," which sets the stage for Hetty's new start in life. After turning 60, she decides to take a job at the local post office -- much to the dismay of her husband, Robert (Derek Benfield) -- and becomes suspicious of a young couple cashing pension checks that obviously can't be their own. Discovering a knack for crime-solving, Hetty decides to become a private investigator and enlists the help of a young man, Geoffrey Shawcross (The Lord of the Rings' Dominic Monaghan) to become her "devoted sidekick." In "Eye Witness," the duo search for a deaf man who has disappeared after witnessing a murder; "Widdershins" finds Hetty on the case of Robert's elderly uncle, who has apparently committed suicide; and in the final case of the season, "Safe as Houses," an old friend of Hetty's seeks her help in finding her troubled foster daughter.

For many years now, the PBS has been giving millions of people pleasure by having their own Mystery! series. Although, Hetty isn't as good as Poirot, this show is without a doubt, amazing. After watching one episode, I was hooked. But, sadly they weren't releasing dvds. Now, AcornMedia is, so I'm overjoyed! I, personally think, that AcornMedia is rather good at DVDS. The menus are always nice(look at the Poirot Set One Menu! Wow!). However, picture quality or heaps of special features are not usually seen on these DVDs. So, I'm waiting patiently now for the DVDs, and I hope that I may have persuaded you to buy the dvds too.

This is a great series, that unfortunately only ran 4 seasons. Despite the pilot "Missing Persons" which we thought was not really very good, the 4 seasons of the tv show (BBC television) were excellent!
