Patricia Routledge returns in her role as the titular enterprising sleuth in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates -- Series 3. Backed up by her husband, Robert (Derek Benfield), and her teenage sidekick, Geoffrey Shawcross (Lost's Dominic Monaghan), the Lancashire housewife puts her nosy talents to work sniffing out wrongdoing. This season sees Shawcross promoted to full partner in the Wainthropp Detective Agency, which is quite an accomplishment for an ex-thief and shoplifter. The six cases of Series 3, which originally aired Stateside on Mystery! in the spring of 2000, include: "All Stitched Up," in which Hetty tries to bring down a teenage pyromaniac; "Daughter of the Regiment," wherein Hetty is hired by a woman who thinks a strange photographer has been stalking her daughter; "Serving the Community," which finds Hetty on the trail of a bank robber; "Fisticuffs," in which Hetty looks for a woman who attacked another motorist after a fender-bender; "Childsplay," affording Shawcross a major role in the investigation when he infiltrates a school gang; and "Pursuit by Proxy," a follow-the-money tale as Hetty searches for a shopkeeper who ransacked the till and took it on the lam.

As fans of the "Murder She Wrote" series, we purchased the dvds of Hetty Wainthropp Investigates and started with the Complete Third Series. This program aired on the BBC network in the 1990s, and ran for four seasons. The cast included Patricia Routledge and Dominic Monaghan (seen in Lord of the Rings). The characters are engaging, and the mysteries are interesting. This series should have gone on for 15 years instead of four. The BBC made a big mistake canceling it, however, we can enjoy it on DVD. It's based on characters in the book "Missing Persons" by David Cook. We've already watched all four seasons worth of episodes, and it really has us wanting more. It's really enjoyable, and you have to pay close attention, because the British have some sayings that are unfamiliar to U.S. citizens, like "cheeky!" It's really enjoyable
