Higglytown Heroes: To The Rescue

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
You're stranded on a mountaintop. You are lost at an art fair. Your hot dog cart is missing. You're too hot to hopscotch. And the local playground funhouse is on fire. These look like jobs for the Higglytown Heroes. Seemingly taking its inspiration from the Sesame Street standard "The People in Your Neighborhood," this computer-animated Disney Channel series spotlights the contributions of, and fosters appreciation for, everyday community helpers -- including, in this collection of five stories, police officers, lifeguards, and firefighters, who come to the aid of inseparable best friends Wayne, Eubie, Twinkle, Kip, and Fran, a squirrel that seems to be channeling its "You betcha" accent from Fargo. Designed like Russian nesting dolls, the hip-hoppity characters slide about on flat bottoms. Cicely Tyson and Katey Sagal are among the actors who voice the various "Heroes." Heightening viewer anticipation, each story features recurring elements, including a cameo appearance by Pizza Guy, who lends a helpful hand, and animated notebook drawings by Twinkle, which offer whimsical and fanciful solutions to the problems at hand. Original songs in a variety of styles reinforce simple lessons and basic learning concepts (a high-flying ditty in the story "Balloon-a-Palooza" introduces the concepts of high/low, big/small). Higglytown Heroes is a welcome preschool series that is original, fun, and unusual.
