Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
In the 65-plus years since Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland first all but patented the idea of putting on a show, the spirited high-school-musical formula has been reworked on film countless times. Still, one is hard pressed to recall a variation that has met with more phenomenal, out-of-nowhere success than the Disney Channel's surprising High School Musical. Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) is his school's star basketball player. Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Anne Hudgens) is a math whiz he meets on vacation. They make beautiful music together in a karaoke contest. Shades of Grease -- she turns up as the new transfer student at his school, and together, they decide to try out for the school musical, a threat to the social status quo. The karaoke-crossed lovers first face peer pressure from Troy's teammates and Gabriella's "brainiac" pals. Then, there are the machinations of the school's reigning drama queen, Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and her brother, Ryan (Lucas Grabeel). Ultimately, of course, there is a jubilant conclusion, played out during a confluence of musical call-backs, a championship hoops game, and the scholastic decathlon. Alyson Reed deserves applause as the hilariously "harsh" drama teacher Mrs. Darbus, who is part Margo Channing (from All About Eve) and part Simon Cowell. Director and choreographer Kenny Ortega (Dirty Dancing) makes all the right moves with such high-spirited showstoppers as "Stick to the Status Quo," "Get'cha Head in the Game," and the sassy, Latin-flavored "Bop to the Top." Since High School Musical debuted on the Disney Channel in January 2006, the film has become a pop-culture phenomenon, an innocent Rocky Horror for the tween set. It became the highest-rated program in Disney Channel history, spawning sing-along and dance-along rebroadcasts, as well as chart-topping soundtrack album and singles. Much more would seem inevitable for this sudden smash, and for all involved.
All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
Although this Disney telepic won incredibly high ratings among its target audience and spawned a chart-topping soundtrack CD, High School Musical is at best a middling attempt at reviving the old-time "tuner." To start with the good news, the young cast is extremely appealing, and their energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to the material (as well as their teen-magazine cuteness) go a long way toward making Musical work -- and help to explain why so many teens and 'tweens found it so engaging. Kenny Ortega has staged the musical numbers sharply; the choreography itself is of varying quality, but Ortega captures them well on film. And certainly the basic theme -- whether it's better to be yourself or to be what is expected of you -- is one that resonates with the viewers Musical is reaching out to. Unfortunately, that theme is carried out via a screenplay that is trite, superficial, unbelievable, and actively annoying -- at least to most viewers over 18. There are also large credibility issues, including whether the drama clique at any high school could be as popular as presented here; the cartoonish manner in which the drama teacher is written and acted; and the fact that the leading male is supposed to be a major contender for a basketball career, despite the fact that a generous guess at his height would put him at no more than 5' 10." To make matters worse, the adult characters are one-dimensional stereotypes, Ortega's direction is overly obvious, and the score, with one or two exceptions, is bland pop pap. Still, many people will be very willing to overlook these flaws, finding the youthful cast and the basic idea more than enough to keep them entertained.

    A reviewer

When i saw the first commercial for high school musical i thought "ok, a new disney movie, i'll watch it knowing it well be awsome." boy was i wrong! its horrible, the songs are annoying and the dances are strange. Now i am a dancer myself and i love music but, those songs and dances stunk on ice!! i love to see musicals but, this mocks them! i also hate how every girl in my class talked about zack afferon or what ever his last name is. Oh zack this... Oh zack that...Dont you think he's cute...Some day i'm going to marry him! thats all they talked about for the school year. There are many good movies out there but high school musical is not one of them. And by the way there better things to do then watch that movie. Pick up a book (and not the movie book people)! oh and by the way ashley tisdale should have gotten a better part.Anyway in conclusion there are great movies out there, but high school musical is not one of them! so pick a better movie people!

    HATE!!!!!!!

I absolutely HATE ths movie. It's so stupid, preteen boppish, and fake. None of the actors or singers could sing, dance, or act. All I ever see are these kids walkig around with high school musical stuff on. What a shame. They should find better movies to watch instead of this movie that is unrealistic at all times. Plus the annoying songs get stuck in yur head and your friends heads and they are really strange songs. This movie was also a bad influence on kids by telling them that it is okay to harm someone else to better yourself. A.K.A - when Ashley and her brother changed the auditions so they could win them.

    Worst Movie I've Ever Seen

This movie flat-out sucked. I hated it. First of all, nobody in the movie could sing at all. The movie was boring and the only reason everybody watches it is because of Zac Efron. Neither can these people act. It was a sorry excuse for a movie. Don't watch it AT ALL. Disney has been making some really bad movies lately. It doesn't help that they are making a 'High School Musical 2'. Like the first wasn't bad enough.

    High School Musical

Disney channel movies are always extremely poor, but it was shocking that this movie ever made it out on DVD. Sure the songs are catchy, but it is completely unrealistic. I don't know about you, but at my highschool kids just don't start breaking into song in the cafeteria and start break-dancing on tables. It's unnatural. Disney is pushing kids into loving un-funny shows that are far from real-life. Sorry, but the Disney channel SUCKS.

    Yuck!

This movie is so corny! Ashley Tisdale in the movie with her co-star brother are so fake. And the songs and dances are yuck. Zac Efron is not even cute!I really think that the only reason girls like this movie is because of Zac Efron.

    Come On!!!

I cannot believe how many people are obsessed with this movie. Seriously, the movie is terrible. First of all, it completely makes fun of theater, and what real musicals are like. Second of all, it is COMPLETELY different from what it is like to go in and audition and go through with the auditioning process, giving people (somewhat) wrong information. Also, anyone who has been to high school knows that high school is nothing like that. I mean, yeah, it goes against peer pressure and everything, but it's completely cheesy. The actors don't can't sing, and it is sooo completely obvious that they are lip-synching. There is a reason that this was on Disney Channel and didn't get into the movie theaters. Yick. I can't believe I even spent my time watching this piece of junk.

    Awesome family entertainment

Hey kiddos that hated the movie because it was unbelievable as far as high school life - umm - it wasn't a documentary. It was supposed to "mock" some things. And I'm sure kids don't break out in song in your cafeteria - but in a musical - they do. Obviously the awards this movie won speak for itself. As for Zac Effron having no talent - he's starring in Hairspray with some really big names - must have done something right. HSM is right up there with Grease, Saturday Night Fever, West Side Story - if you watch these you'll see that they broke out in song in some very strange situations....

    Enjoyable

This movie was everything it was supposed to be. It was silly, random, and utterly unrealistic, but it was light, upbeat and cheerful. People dance and sing randomly BECAUSE it is a musical. It is fantastical, because it is supposed to be. It is a musical set in high school, and about a musical in high school. It is not Citizen Kane, but it is NOT supposed to be. It is supposed to be a made for TV musical and it is the best in its genre.

I'm Tired Of HSM!!!!! Where's the remote?

When the movie first came out I thought 'yeah! This movie is ok and is alright.' but It's been a YEAR! A YEAR! And there still doing musicals ad doing pop ups for HSM! I MEAN STOP THE MADNESS! I'm sick and tired of the movie and I'm about to go crazy if I see it again. I thought it was ok but now I'm just tired of it. It's like a toe fungus. It's a ok movie but I'm not obessed and about to scream "HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL ROCKS! PLAY IT AGAIN!" Because I'm frankly tired of the movie and am not that thrilled to see A HSM 2 around for another year. Watch there probably be a HSM 10. I honestly do not remember the movie Rip girls (A personal favorite) being in the spotlight nor Gotta Kick It Up! Those movies deserve to be in the spotlight. Anyways , down to the point. The movie isn't very original. Girl meets guy , girl ends up going to same school (real Original) , girl and boy fall for each other , boy and girls friends end up seperating the 2 and then they help them get back 2gether. That's really original. I'm sure that someone didn't already think of that.. And last.. What's with all the dancing and singing? A musical had soul , has heart , and has a plot.Unlike HSM. I mean , when I go to eat lunch I don't just break out dancing and singing. Where's the drama. The only thing dramatic was when the girl's heart got broken. And it doesn't deal with real things - All they do is sing , dance , and talk. I can honestly say that I'm not going to be sitting around watching my tv when HSM 2 comes out.

    High School Musical

Do not bother watching this. If you like 'good clean fun' that is far from fun, then this movie is made just for you. If you like poor actors and actresses playing roles no one can really relate to, then this movie is made just for you. I don’t know what’s worse, that Zac kid lip singing or teenagers jumping on tables and break dancing while singing in harmony without missing a note. C’mon people WAKE UP, Harry Potter is more believable than this crap.

    Get Up and Dance!

At Last! As a parent of Disney Channel watchers I believe most shows have characters yelling all their lines to get our kids attention. This movie uses dance and music to get attention. Kids get up and dance! Enjoyable exercise AND a great message in this movie-"Don't let others decide who you are - Be and Believe in yourself". Even better is the music itself. Great melody and lyrics. Thanks Disney for what viewers have been waiting a very long time for.

    Good Movie and Musical

OK!!!! For one for those people who trashed this movie with their reveiws...If you had payed enough attention to notice that it was really everyone singing their own parts and not someone else doing it for them. So, oops on you! I thought this movie was a great movie and that there needs to be more like it. Musicals are supposed to be somewhat unrealistic and they just need to be fun. So whatever to what everyone else says. If you like musicals and are looking for something good to watch then I recommend it!
