    DIE SPIRITS

I also watched this film when i was younger, (so much for age limits eh?) the film was really scary to me then, especially the death scenes and ghost effects. I havent seen it since so i will buy the DVD and i will be intrigued to know what kind of a reaction i have to it now!I remember that there was comedy in it and a bit of romance and i thought the place where it was filmed was enchanting. This is definately the horror genre that Ghostbusters comes under as it has the same kind of approach (comedy and tame horror), definately more scary than Nosferatu!!! I know that much.

    Horrifically Hillarious!

This movie is so funny it has been a favorite of mine for years. When I first saw it I was about 8 and it scared me half to death! I can only look back at that and laugh, because, while it is a unique ghost story, the ridiculousness of the situations and the quick clever dialogue clearly marks this as a comedy. I love it and highly reccommend High Spirits to anyone with a good sense of humor!

    A reviewer

Neil Jordan's name on a movie is some kind of recommendation for some of us, but this one is a bit uneven, as the cited professional reviewer says. It's a movie that I'm unaccountably fond of despite its faults, however. The most jarring note is the casting of Steve Guttenberg as the American tourist husband of Beverly D'Angelo who falls in love with the ghost played by Darryl Hannah. The English and Irish casting is excellent however. Guttenberg does do well in his scenes with Peter O'Toole, showing that great actors can carry lesser ones along with them, like Michael Jordan in basketball. The most pleasant aspect of the film is the fine mood that begins to emerge when one of the Irish female cast begins to sing a sad and lilting Irish ballad on the night of the first dinner of the tourists. There are beautiful scenes of the castle from the lake and the Irish countryside as well. Unfortunately the comedy veers constantly from ironic and amusing to just silly and annoying. However, if one is patient, by the end one may feel as though Jordan, originally a writer not a movie director, had produced an homage to Shakespeare's romantic comedies, like Midsummer Night's Dream. The last line: "Happiness, Sir Jack." is good.

    Flat, indeed!!!!

A wonderful movie from start (Yes, I think we can stay one more night) to finish (The day is for the living, night, is for the dead)! Reviewers of movies (the hired kind, the ones who are failed writers) no nothing of how GOOD movies are made. This movie is wonderful, it makes you smile, it scares you, it doesn't demonize ghosts, they are just... family. I am, though, amazed that this movie was made by the person who made Crying Game, wow, he really did well on THIS one, at least! A plus, plus, plus! And it is a shame that Liam Neeson has been in so many 'big time' movies, but THIS is his best! As for Peter O'Toole, heck, you can't go wrong with him...ever.

    Frightfully funny

I've loved this movie since I was little, before I was a Liam Neeson fan, and since I couldn't tell the difference between Peter O'Toole and Ian McKellan. While it's not Neil Simon or Shakespeare (and what is, these days?) it's certainly a fun show, and I would say a good date movie. Peter O'Toole in a comedy--who knew?
