Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
A quarter century after it debuted to glowing reviews and won instantaneous viewer acceptance, this groundbreaking series might not seem as impressive as it did back in 1981. But that's just because its innovations have become so thoroughly ingrained, not only in other cop shows but also in most hour-long TV dramas. BeforeHill Street Blues, police procedurals as they were called within the industry had a handful of principals and a few recurring characters. They followed a predictable pattern: crime, detection, pursuit, apprehension. These shows usually dealt with one crime per episode, with few digressions. Steven Bochco and Michael Kozoll changed all that with Hill Street Blues by incorporating daytime serial plotting techniques into the prime-time, hour-long drama. There were more than a dozen principal characters and nearly as many minor ones, and as much as a half dozen plot threads were woven into a large, colorful tapestry. Launched as a midseason replacement, Blues got off to an eye-popping start when two of its regulars, Officers Bobby Hill Michael Warren and Andy Renko Charles Haid, were shot by drug dealers. The pilot also found precinct captain Frank Furillo series star Daniel J. Travanti trying to defuse a hostage situation while his gung-ho SWAT team leader James B. Sikking agitated for decisive action. Additionally, the first episode introduced various detectives and officers who would shortly prove integral to the show's success. And they weren't all stalwart, iron-willed do-gooders, either: Detective Johnny LaRue Kiel Martin, for example, had a drinking problem and was perpetually broke. Hill Street Blues completely revitalized the police drama, and if you carefully watch the 17 episodes collected in this DVD set, you'll realize just how influential it really remains.

    This show led the way..................

Hill Street Blues is a cornerstone of great TV crime drama. Other great crime dramas that came after it such as all of the Law and Order series and CSI series owe it a debt of graditude. It was way ahead of it's time in the 1980's and still withstands the test of time today. Fantastic series. Does anyone know if/when the other great series of the early 1980's, St. Elsewhere is going to be released on DVD? Now that Hill Street Blues has begun to appear it only seems natural to release this ground breaking medical series that paved the way for today's great medical dramas such as ER.
