Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
This five-disc set ranks among the best documentary histories ever made on the musical revolution that is rock 'n' roll. A lush, ten-hour extravaganza produced by TV veteran Andew Solt, The History of Rock 'n' Roll traces the music from its humble beginnings in the '50s to Lollapalooza in the '90s, revisiting the movement's defining moments. These include Elvis Presley's first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, the British Invasion, Motown, Woodstock, metal, punk, grunge, and everything in between. Along with classic performance footage, the series -- which initially aired in TV syndication back in 1995 -- boasts interviews with such rock giants as Mick Jagger, Bono, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Pete Townshend, and Jerry Lee Lewis. Whether you're a casual listener or a well-versed rock-ologist, The History of Rock 'n' Roll is essential viewing.

    History of Rock & Roll

Although many of the interviews and artist commentaries are getting a bit dated, this is an entertaining stroll down this subject lane. A lot is left out, even though there is about 10 hours of video herein, but I suppose that is to be expected, especially when one considers how much was going on in the crucial '60s period. More artists interviewed would have been nice, and a few more complete songs would have been good. Still, for someone who grew up in that era it is a fun view, and it is a valid reference for younger rock aficionados who are wanting to know (and are willing to accept) who and what is truly the roots of the "new" music of the times.
