Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
A publishing phenomenon, Louis Sachar's multi-award-winning book Holes enjoys a fervent fan base that, like Harry Potter devotees, would not respond kindly to a film that took liberties with the source material. Outside of the slimming-down of the screen incarnation of hapless, cursed Stanley Yelnats IV (Shia LaBeouf), this film remains faithful to Sachar's complex, time-shifting story (thanks, no doubt, to Sachar’s authoring of the screenplay). Stanley, like all Yelnats men, has a knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. After being wrongly convicted of stealing a pair of sneakers, he is sent to Camp Green Lake. There is no lake. There is nothing green about it. Instead, the camp is located in the desert, hundreds of miles from water. "You want to run away?" he is asked by the menacing caretaker Mr. Sir (Jon Voight, sporting a Jimmy Neutron-like pompadour). "You'll be buzzard food in three days." The residents, a ragtag group of delinquents, are charged with digging holes each day in the hot sun, risking encounters with rattlesnakes and the dread yellow-spotted lizard. Stanley begins to suspect that the warden (Sigourney Weaver, in a deliciously nasty turn) is actually looking for something beneath the parched desert sands. Director Andrew Davis (The Fugitive) deftly grounds the fantastic tale, which also involves a vengeful fortune teller and a frontier schoolteacher turned notorious bandit (Patricia Arquette). Holes is one of the 2003's family treasures.
All Movie Guide
An intricate balancing act of subplots and flashbacks, author Louis Sachar's Newberry Award-winning novel Holes translates fairly well onscreen, despite occasionally falling off-kilter. Unerringly faithful to the book, Holes takes on issues ranging from racial discrimination to what constitutes true character rehabilitation without a trace of heavy-handedness. Sachar, who also wrote the screenplay for Holes, has a clear and touching respect for the ability of children to grasp a message without the aide of an adult-wielded hammer. Newcomer Shia LaBeouf communicates the palindrome-named Stanley Yelnats' quiet bravery surprisingly well, and the supporting cast -- particularly Jon Voight as Texas tough-guy Mr. Sir, and Eartha Kitt's mysterious Madame Zeroni -- adds a non-saccharine richness to this already deeply interwoven story. Without the help of chapters or narration, however, the multi-leveled plots of Holes are sometimes hard to follow, if beautifully shot, particularly for anyone who hasn't read the book beforehand. The roots of the Yelnats family curse and the future involvement of schoolteacher-turned-outlaw Kissin' Kate Barlow (Patricia Arquette) are explained in flashbacks which often appear frenzied and occur with a frequency that deters from the development of the present-day characters. Still, though some of the subtleties of Holes are lost in translation, the symbolism that connects Stanley to Madame Zeroni's descendant, Kissin' Kate's buried loot, and the camp warden's (Sigourney Weaver) mysterious goal (not to mention cure-all onions, spiced peaches, stinky feet, and deadly yellow-spotted lizards) comes together in an excellent coming-of-age story that both children and adults would do well with viewing.

    An Amazing Movie

I read the book with my fourth grade class last year and after two chapters I had to buy a copy myself so I could read ahead. After I finished the book I rented the movie and I thought it was almost as outstanding as the book. I put this movie #1 on my favorite movies list.

    A movie with true meaning.

My mom and I read the book together and thought the book was worth getting the Newberry Award. After reading the book, we thought that since we were finished with the book, we might as well watch the movie. Unlike most movies based on books, I discovered the movie was so close to the book. I learned that nothing is a coincidence, but every single thing in life happens because of destiny. If you are searching for a terrific movie that teaches you moral value, I strongly suggest Holes.

Highly Recommended by a Holes book reader

This is a fantastic movie. To be quite honest there was a second there where i didnt want to see it, but when i finally went to see it i found it was exactly the opposite of what i thought. You see what i thought was that the movie was going to stray from the whole point of the book, BUT surprisingly it didn't! I was amazed about how the movie stayed so close to the book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! A MUST SEE! GO! GO! BUY!

    Holes

I did not read the book but intend to some day. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It was an entertaining movie. I am not sure that younger children would enjoy it as it would be kind of scary to them about kids going to a prison camp where they dig holes. I did like the cast and liked Signourney Weaver and Jon Voight in the cast. It ends up being a story about kids versus the adults. It really makes you appreciate your life that we aren't having to dig holes in a prison camp. Overall it was a very good movie that I would recommend.

    A Funny Movie

This movie is one of the few I've seen in a long time that stays close to the books version of things. If anyone is interested the book is also called Holes and it is written by Louis Sachar and you should read it before you watch the movie because they do leave out some details that might cause a few head scrathces. Or if you have already seen the movie you could read it anyway for fun. But this movie is one that should be added to any collection because it is one you can enjoy until you have kids and they can share the fun.

i was watching this yesterday b/c i've never actually seen the entire thing. in fourth grade, i remember reading the book and this is one of those rare instances where the movie doesn't completely suck when put up against the book. both are awesome and i highly recommend them.

    A reviewer

This is the perfect movie for the whole family. You have to watch this movie carefully from the beginning to fully understand it. I had to watch it three or four times in order to understand the plot, because I have not read the book. But I did enjoy the movie. What I like most about it are the boys' catchy nicknames. They each had a nickname to suit their personalities. I highly recommend it.

    Holes the movie!!! :)

I thought this movie was soo good. We read the book in class, and saw the play yesterday as a school field trip, too! The movie is exactly like the book and did you know... Louis Sachar was on the set of the movie??? Another thing is that if you didn't understand the book, the movie had a better way of understanding! I had to get the DVD after I saw it at achool!:)

    Awesome!

I really wasn't sure weather I should go see this in theaters or not. But then I had to babysit my cousin and I took her to see this movie. It surprised me. Most Disney movies are extremly corny. So it changed my idea of most disney movies. This movie is great no matter what age.

Watch the Movie, Read the Book

I saw the movie and loved it so much that I wished that I had read the book. I watched the movie, Holes, with my sister and two nephews (5 and 8 years old). We all thought that Holes was wonderful, so I had to read the book. The movie stays very true to the book with very few differences. It has many twists and turns and always keeps you guessing. I love how everything comes together towards the end of the movie and leaves no loose ends. I recommend this movie for children and adults a like since I¿m 25 and thoroughly enjoyed it.

    Complex, yet perfectly put together

I loved this movie. Although it was lengthy and complex, it really kept me interested. The great thing about this movie is that despite the knowledge from the book, you aren't ahead of the story, you stay with it until it ties together at the end. Shia LeBouf was great in this, he is so talented! The star-studded cast and the new faces was a plus as well
