Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Lucia Bozzola
After shifting from his 1980s teen cycle to general family dysfunction in Uncle Buck (1989), writer/producer John Hughes unexpectedly hit the blockbuster jackpot with the family comedy Home Alone (1990). Placing precocious Uncle Buck supporting player Macaulay Culkin center stage, the Chris Columbus-directed portrayal of a clever eight-year-old accidentally left behind by his vacationing family swiftly moves from the expected forays into ice cream gorging and late-night TV to an extended, Rube Goldbergian defense of his well-appointed suburban home from a couple of dim-witted burglars. With Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern executing some overly painful slapstick as the thwarted criminals, a number of critics objected to scenes of "cartoonish" violence that were a bit too intense, but Culkin's easy, wide-eyed charm won over audiences. The unheralded, inexpensive Christmas-season release went on to become a sleeper hit and one of the highest-grossing comedies of all time, turning Culkin into the top child star of the early '90s. Culkin also starred in the highly popular sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), but by the time the franchise got around to Home Alone 3 (1997), the thrill -- and Culkin -- was gone.

One of the best Christmas movies ever!

I saw "Home Alone" when it first came out in 1990,and just watched it again on this new DVD.It hasn't dated one bit.The movie is as fresh, funny, and appealing as ever.Seeing it again made me remember that it's also very touching as well, especially in the church scene with Kevin and Mr.Marley.The cast is wonderful.Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are a hoot.Catherine O'Hara and John Heard are delightful. And it's easy to see why the film made Macaulay Culkin a star-what a talented cutie he was!John Hughes' script is hilarious and sometimes quite moving.Chris Columbus's direction is perfect, and he shows a particular talent for getting the best from his actors. The movie looks and sounds better than ever(Fox did a brilliant job with the transfer).John Williams wraps it all up in one of his loveliest and most memorable scores. The main theme,"Somewhere In My Memory",is one of his most beautiful melodies."Home Alone"is a holiday comedy classic.Sit back and enjoy!

    A holiday classic!

When I saw this movie 16 years ago, I told friends I thought it was destined to become a holiday classic -- maybe not gaining "It's A Wonderful Life" or "A Christmas Story" status, but certainly high up there. Loaded with slapstick and gushy sentiment, it's just sheer fun for the child-hero in us all.

A classic that continues to age well.

This is the kind of movie that everyone loves. The kids love to watch it with their parents when they're young, although they won't admit it during their tennage years. However, when they return from college, you know it is a good movie when they sit down again with the parents and watch it again, every Christmas.

This will be a classic for years to come! I believe it will be classified with classics such as The Sound of Music and Mary Poppin's. Every year on the 24th of December, my brother and I order a plain cheese pizza and watch Home Alone!

    Great!

When the McCalister family rushes out the door in a big hurry to catch a plane to Parris, it seems that Kevin was forgotten. Now he has the place to himself, but danger is just around the corner. A really funny movie, and definately one to own!
