Overview

This little-seen effort from Pete Walker -- one of his rare credits outside the horror genre -- has been given a quality presentation in this DVD release from Media Blasters' Shriek Show imprint. Home Before Midnight has been given a widescreen transfer to disc, letterboxed on standard televisions at the aspect ratio of 1:85:1 and enhanced for 16x9 playback on widescreen monitors. While the image is sometimes a bit soft, this appears to be a characteristic of Peter Jessop's cinematography rather than the transfer, and the color balance looks natural and accurate. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo (preserving the original monophonic sound mix), and sounds as good as one might expect for a mid-budget film of the period. The dialogue is in English, with no multiple language options or subtitles. Among the bonus features are an on-camera interview with Pete Walker in which he discusses the production of the film, a gallery of stills from the picture (which surprisingly feature several of the film's nude scenes), and trailers for a handful of other Pete Walker titles. If this isn't an exceptional release, it's certainly a good one, and considering Home By Midnight's rarity (especially in the United States), this will certainly please fans interested in one of Walker's more unusual projects.
