Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
The Disney animated feature Home on the Range comes as something of a relief in the wake of such visually impressive epics as Atlantis: The Lost Continent, Treasure Planet, and Brother Bear. As with the surprise hit The Emperor' s New Groove, this wild western comedy seeks only to entertain, and Disney has corralled some grade-A talent to achieve that goal, most notably Oscar winner Alan Menken, the composer behind The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. Among the performers on the soundtrack are k. d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, Tim McGraw, and Randy Quaid as outlaw Alameda Slim, whose rollicking cattle-rustling hoedown, "Yodle-Adle-Eedle-Idle-Oo," is a catchy comic highlight. The story concerns three cows who band together to capture Slim and collect the reward that will save their dairy farm, the aptly named Little Patch of Heaven. Their leader, Mrs. Calloway Dame Judi Dench, is a very proper bovine, while Maggie Roseanne is a brassy, wisecracking show cow and Grace Jennifer Tilly is a new-age ditz. Cuba Gooding Jr. brings all his high spirits and a touch of James Brown to Buck, a "hotshot" horse who yearns to be a bounty-hunting hero. Home on the Range may not exactly be blue-ribbon material, but with its lovable, spin-off-worthy characters and old-fashioned brand of traditional cel-drawn animation, this will be a little patch of heaven in your video collection.
All Movie Guide
This is the way Disney's hand-drawn animation department ends -- not with a bang, but a whimper. Like a veteran ballplayer continuing to suit up after the onset of arthritis, Home on the Range stumbles in at just over 70 minutes, a pale shadow of the giants that revived the studio's clout in the 1990s. It may feature a handful of plucky cows, but the film was far short of a cash cow, returning only $50 million domestically on its reported $110 million budget. It's not that Home on the Range is bad, so much as colossally unimportant. It's easy to see why Disney rarely strays from fairy tales or other stories in the public domain, because this saga of three cows protecting the farm from Old West archetypes and other varmints is small and flavorless. Save a few angular landscapes and sharply designed characters, the animators seem to have given up on being inventive, knowing that their jobs would not survive this project. Home on the Range does have a wickedly metaphorical undercurrent, as the plot involves the closure of numerous farms and ranches -- the end of the old way of doing things. But Home on the Range would only entertain the youngest tykes even if it had been CG. Seeing as how the film is aimed at such an infantile demographic, it's all the more strange that they slapped a PG rating on what amounts to a totally inoffensive piece of insignificance. Happy trails, Disney, until we meet again -- if we ever do.

Not Disney's best, but definitely worth your time

While _Home on the Range_ isn't a sweeping epic like _Mulan_ or ground-breaking like _Beauty and the Beast_, it is a fun, fast-paced film that will hold the attention of children and parents alike. And who can't use some pure, fluffly entertainment along side the stuff to make you think? The story concerns three cows, Mrs. Caloway, Grace, and Maggie, who must find a way to save their home, Little Patch of Heaven, from the auction block. As luck would have it, the exact amount they need is the bounty on the most ruthless cattle rustle in the county, Alameda Slim (voice with great gusto and finesse by Randy Quaid). Going against bounty hunter Ricco and his borrowed hero-wannabe horse, Buck (Cuba Gooding Jr), our three heronies set out the get the bad guy. Plenty of action, beautifully rendered artwork (the scenic stuff is pure magic), and quirky characters (the three little pigs are especially fun -- and they get their own special treatment in a bonus short on the DVD!). A must have for any Disney library.
