Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
After the harrowing Season 4 finale in which Frank Pembleton (Andre Braugher) suffers a stroke while interrogating a suspect in "the box," Season 5 (1996-97) of Homicide: Life on the Street finds the recovering detective returning to desk duty. Pembleton's struggle to reclaim his position as an active detective on murder cases is among this year's many compelling story lines. Other season-long arcs explored include the ongoing federal investigation of Det. Mike Kellerman (Reed Diamond), related to corruption in his former arson unit, and the continuing reign of drug lord Luther Mahoney (Erik Todd Dellums). Kellerman's problems begin in "Bad Medicine" when he finds out he's being investigated; and, in "White Lies," an article about the investigation appears in the Baltimore Sun and Kellerman becomes so unhinged that he is suspended until he takes a polygraph test. The investigation finally comes to a head in "Betrayal," causing Kellerman to break down and contemplate suicide in "Have a Conscience." Drug-related homicides are on the rise in the city, all because of Mahoney, who finally gets his comeuppance in "Deception." Frank's highlight episodes include his shooting-range exam in "The True Test" and his return to being the primary detective on a case in "Blood Wedding." Other season highlights include: the introduction of new medical examiner Julianna Cox (Michelle Forbes) in "M.E., Myself, and I"; Brodie's (Max Perlich) screening of his film about the squad in "The Documentary"; and Richard Belzer's (Det. John Munch) stellar performance in the heartwarming "Kaddish." Kyle Secor also gets a standout arc this season, as Det. Tim Bayliss comes to grips with his abuse as a child. Some of the many guest stars this season include Elijah Wood, Rosanna Arquette, Edie Falco, and Charles S. Dutton, making Season 5 required viewing for all Homicide fans.
