Barnes & Noble
Season 6 of the long-running cop series opens with a three-part episode, "Blood Ties," wherein Detectives Stivers Toni Lewis and Lewis Clark Johnson investigate the shooting of drug kingpin Luther Mahoney at Season 5’s close. The season also opens with three new detectives joining Homicide: Det. Laura Ballard Callie Thorne, Det. Paul Falsone Jon Seda, and Det. Stu Gharty Peter Gerety, the latter two getting full-time gigs after essaying recurring roles in Season 5. In the pivotal episode "Birthday," Kellerman Reed Diamond learns that Georgia Rae Mahoney Hazelle Goodman, Luther's sister, has a surveillance tape from the night of the shooting. This revelation has him sweating bullets, because the other detectives already have doubts about Kellerman's justification for firing the fatal shot. In "All Is Bright," Medical Examiner Julianna Cox Michelle Forbes convinces Kellerman to tell Stivers and Lewis about the possibly incriminating videotape, and in "Closet Cases," Mahoney reveals to Kellerman that the tape story was a bluff; she's now convinced that he shot her brother in cold blood, and she promises retribution. In "Shaggy Dog, City Goat," she sues Kellerman, the department, and the city of Baltimore for $60 million, and after Det. Lewis confronts her about it, he's suspended. A judge decides there's enough evidence to turn the suit into a jury trial in "Pit Bull Sessions," and the yearlong arc comes to a satisfying conclusion in the two-parter "Fallen Heroes." Other season highlights include the Law & Order crossover "Baby It's You," guest-starring Jerry Orbach and Benjamin Bratt as Detectives Briscoe and Curtis, and one of the most heart-wrenching Homicide episodes ever: "Subway," in which a man future Law & Order: Criminal Intent star Vincent D'Onofrio is grotesquely pinned between a subway car and the platform. Det. Pembleton Andre Braugher does his best to comfort the fully conscious victim -- who slowly comes to the awful realization that he cannot survive -- while Det. Bayliss Kyle Secor strives to determine if the man fell or was, in fact, pushed into the path of the train. Included with the set is the PBS documentary "Anatomy of a Homicide," which tells the story of this episode's creation. And as with other Homicide seasons, guest stars shine, including James Earl Jones, Steve Allen, Jayne Meadows, Alfre Woodard, Paul Giamatti, Charles Durning, Smallville's John Glover, and The O.C.'s Peter Gallagher.
