Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
This superb police drama began life on NBC in 1993 and struggled for acceptance despite critical acclaim, always living in the cultural shadow of ABC’s slick hit, NYPD Blue. Created by film director Barry Levinson Diner and Tom Fontana later of Oz, Homicide finished its distinguished run in 1999, and the 22 episodes of that seventh season are collected in this set. Shot on location in Baltimore with great attention to local detail, Homicide early on employed a cinema verité storytelling style, relying on handheld cameras and dialogue written to sound as though it were improvised. Levinson insisted on giving the show production values comparable to feature films, and his input paid off handsomely over the course of the series. Following a sixth-season finale that left some recurring characters dead and others disgraced, the final group of episodes picks up a few months after those tumultuous events. "Kellerman, P.I." reveals that Detective Mike Kellerman Reed Diamond has become a private investigator after resigning under fire, but the installment's real focus is the hunt for someone who left a newborn baby to die behind a cheap motel; Jena Malone, one of the best young actresses working today, shines as the teen mother implicated in the crime. In "The Same Coin," a hit-and-run investigation turns out to have special significance for Detective Stu Gharty Peter Gerety, whose recurring flashbacks to his stint in Vietnam play a part in the story's resolution: The episode's climactic confrontation between Gharty and Detective John Munch Richard Belzer still startles. "Lines of Fire," one of the most suspenseful hours to be found in Homicide's entire run, stars Ron Eldard as a distraught dad who holds two children hostage in his sister-in-law's apartment and will only talk to Detectives Gharty and Mike Giardello Giancarlo Esposito. The series finale, "Forgive Us Our Trespasses," features the long-awaited wedding of Munch to girlfriend Billie Lou Hatfield Ellen McElduff, but the primary plot thread revolves around the release on a technicality of the infamous "Internet killer," whom the detectives believe is likely to murder again.
