This delights Matthau: now that all of his former colleagues are chasing after him, he has a reason to get up in the morning. As written by Brian Garfield, Hopscotch was a conventionally serious espionage novel. As adapted for the big screen by Garfield and Bryan Forbes, Hopscotch is a lively exercise in cloak-and-dagger comedy, even when the pursuit of Matthau turns deadly towards the end. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

    Don't Miss This Classic

Hopscotch is my favorite movie. The cast is wonderful, the script is fantastic and the music is amazing. When I hear Ned Beatty yelling 'What's Happening!!!!!' and Sam Waterson's reply, I laugh myself senseless every time I watch the movie. This film is an unrecognized jewel that more people should discover.

    A True Classic

The reason I wound up here is because my videotape finally died after many many viewings, and I intend to replace it on DVD to avoid that happening again. To all of the foregoing praise, which I heartily agree with, I would add that Glenda Jackson is perfect with Matthau - I think anybody else would have been swamped by his personality. You can see the two of them together in the only other movie they ever made together (how sad), House Calls - another classic.

Why you should buy this DVD

I saw this movie Hopscotch when it came out in the movie theater's. And to this day it is Walter Matthau's movie alot of people should see. They cast is great. The plot is funny about the CIA and how some people take their job a little to seriously. I loved it. Buy it you will enjoy it.

    The Sting strikes again

You're probably only reading this because you are already a fan of Hopscotch. If not, please notice that at the time this was written, every previous reviewer had rated it 5 out of a possible 5. I am no exception. If you enjoyed the way the ''The Sting'' stung the mark and the audience, you will enjoy Hopscotch. It is filled with irony and clever plot twists. The way Matthau's character, Kendig, keeps one step ahead of his colleagues at the CIA is a joy to behold. You can not watch this movie without laughing out loud, holding your breath a few times, and smiling to yourself for hours afterward (even after seeing it dozens of times).

    A classic comedy/spy film

Criterion issued this classic film with good image and sound quality in its intended Cinemascope wide-screen format, far superior to the previous Laser Disc pan-and-scan version.
The director and cast members turn in magnificent performances. This is a must-see film which stands up very well with repeated viewings.

    Walter the Great

One of his greats. But, as always, he was always great. Recommend all of his movies. We'll miss him more than you can know.

    I've waited for years

Taped it off broadcast TV years ago, and have eagerly waited for it to become available on tape or DVD. Thoroughly entertaining.

Hopscotch, made here an exciting game

This movie is full of fun,the proverbial older guy who gets to wildly hopscotch around the globe with a wild plan to ''get'' his bosses who think he is getting to old to make it in his line of work. The scenery, the mystery and intrigue is just wonderful. I always enjoy this film, time after time. Walter Mattau is so good. It made my day to see it out on DVD.

    Simply One of the Best!

Walter Matthau delivers one of the great comedic performances in this one. As improbable as the plot may seem (Matthau as a top CIA operative?!?!), this one works and works well. There is an immediate identification with Matthau's character by almost anyone confronted with the modern day corporate world. Unjustly ''retired'' by a system headed by totally self-absorbed idiots, he really shows how fun ''tweaking their noses'' can be. Ned Beatty portrays the moronic ''pointy-haired boss'' to Matthau's ''Dilbert'' a good decade before the comic strip popularized the concept. The supporting cast fills out the film with those interesting characters most of us would love to meet in our retirement years. There's even a brief appearance by Elanor Roosevelt, but you'll have to listen closely for her shining moment. Get this one! WARNING: Ned Beatty's character achieves some of his nastiness through a liberal use of the ''f'' word.
