Wonderful action, Superb acting

it is a joy to follow Horatio Hornblower's ''journey'' as a young officer in HM Navy. From the beginning it is clear that HH is more than just one of the ''young gentlemen''. His ingenuity and wits makes him stand out from the rest. He succeeds in doing his duty using his abilities in a way which gains him the trust and the admiration of the men above and below him. Ioan Gruffudd's performance as Horatio Hornblower as well as Robert Lindsay as Capt. Pellew are indeed outstanding, as well as the rest of the cast. A must-see ! But beware, it can become an addiction !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I absolutely love this series, my father would watch and video t

I absolutely love this series, my father would watch and video tape it for me to watch later, we got him the entire series on DVD (which my brother lost when he lost his storage unit grr) I am trying to find the entire collection again, but there is so many entries I am lost at which one (s) I need to have the complete set I remember the duel, fire ships etc... but cannot remember how many there were in the series... I also do not normally like alot of "battle" movies but this series hooked me from the start even the original movie with Gregory Peck was awesome... but like you others commenting: Ioann Gruffudd makes all of them worth watching! (ps he's in 102 Dalmations in a lighter role)

Fantastic Fictional Tale

Ever since the 1st Hornblower movie with Gregory Peck, I have been a reader and watcher. Have read the complete anthology by C.S. Forester and while a good bit of adjustment for screen, no version has been anything but immensely satisfying. After reading the books, Peck personified the fictional character wonderfully. In the books, movie and now with the TV series, the intelligence, humbleness, and self doubt of the character developed by Forester are done very well by both actors. Now that Ioan Gruffudds has taken over, he has also done a wonderful job with a very interesting character. Hopefully, the series will continue on at some later dates that will trace this incredible fictional life. These are books, a movie and TV movies all worth having, reading and re-reading, watching and seeing them again. Kudos to the producers of the TV series that have been able to take this from excellent reading to fine watching, losing nothing in the transfer. I have read that Forester, when writing the books, deeply studied fighting sail tactics and the Hornblower Companion book illustrates these quite well. All are worthwhile to those interested in that Napoleonic period and love sea tales.

INCREDIBLE

I personally don't take an interest in naval/war/historic movies...but Hornblower was GREAT! You have to see it! Ok, 3 reasons to watch this film: 1) Good plot, exciting and interesting 2) Great acting involved 3) Main character is....TOTALLY HOT!!! (Ioann Gruffudd) no more to be said!

More Horatio!

Hornblower is Great!! From the first time you see the series you become addicted to seeing more! The evolution of the character brilliantly portrayed by Ioann Gruffudd, is immense...after seeing the first four episodes you'll want to see the rest! The adventures continue, and are just as good. I have just seen the latest two, loyalty and duty and can't wait to get hold of them on video or dvd. Hornblower is brilliant, adapted well from the novels by Andrew's Benson and Grieve, it's like a drug, not illegal, but just as addictive!!!

IF THIS IS FOR TELEVISION, I'M NEVER GOING TO THE MOVIES AGAIN!!!

What an INCREDIBLY HIGH-QUALITY PRODUCTION. Having finished the last disc, I am despondent at the thought of coming to the end of Hornblower's magnificent and compelling evolution. Aside from the wonderful production and bigger-than (my) life action, the portrayal of characters - so considerately drawn - completely involves the viewer. One never wants the voyage to end!

Hornblower was GREAT!!

I first watched hornblower at the age of 10 and I watched the videos over and over again. My mum couldnt get me away. Ioan gruffudd's performance was awesome.I can say the same about Jamie Bamber and Paul Mcgann. Not only did I love it my brother who is 2 years younger that me watched it day in day out with me.It ws a gripping experience to watch and once you've started to watch it, you cannot stop.

Instantly addictive

An excellent and fun miniseries, but be warned, once you have started the first episode it is impossible to stop until you've finished all 6. I was especially impressed by the performances of Ioan Gruffudd and Jamie Bamber.

Horatio Hornblower: Realism and Excitement

I found this video series an exciting portrayal of life upon an English ship of war in the 17th and 18th centuries. The stories, although fictional, did show, in minute detail, life on board a wooden sailing ship. I would recommend this series to anyone who has an interest in historic sailing ships and their crews.

Good series

I saw the series when it was originally broadcasted on A&E network. First I saw a review that said this is best suited for teenage boys... I don't think Teenage boys would have the attention or would even care, if this couldn't get them a better grade in school. The acting in the is good, it portrayed the characters as they are suppose to be portrayed. The plots are strong, and never ventured very far off of them. Because the series is so long, you do have time to get to know the main characters, and see how each of them affect Hornblower in his ''adventures''. One does not have to be a history buff to enjoy this, but it does help. Even though the stories are fictitious, it IS based on real life, and shows how life really was back then.(on and off the ship) This is definately a must see.
