Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
Scenic Caribbean locales, spiffy costumes, and an ocean of 19th-century naval jargon distinguish Horatio Hornblower: The Adventure Continues, a continuation of the Emmy-winning British miniseries following the exploits of novelist C. S. Forester's popular Napoleonic-era naval hero, Horatio Hornblower. The set comprises Episodes 5 and 6 of the series, in which Hornblower Ioan Gruffudd faces a court-martial, charged with mutiny as a result of his tour on HMS Renown under its legendary, though now demented, Captain Sawyer David Warner. The story is told mostly in flashbacks, revealing the truth or falsehood of these charges and telling a top-notch naval adventure to boot. Loyalties, betrayals, and cabals add spice to the exciting battles on land and at sea. Gruffudd reprises the Hornblower role with the earnest heroism that made the original series such a success. Gruffudd is also reunited with a few shipmates from the first series, including Jamie Bamber as his close comrade, Archie Kennedy. Another series veteran, Robert Lindsay, makes a guest appearance as Sir Edward Pellew, Hornblower's first captain and mentor. But the real highlight of this two-part story is the performance of well-known English actor David Warner as the naval legend turned loon. Warner delivers a virtuoso display of larger-than-life English acting, glaring and bellowing his way around the Renown while still managing to imbue his villainous character with real dimension and believability. A nice extra on the two-DVD set is an hourlong documentary, "Sail 2000: Aboard the Eagle," an overview of the history of sail training in the U.S. Navy, Merchant Marine, and Coast Guard. It adds up to more than four hours at sea, plenty of talk about tops'ls and halyards, and enough ocean blue and bounding main to satisfy any armchair seafarer.
Washington Post - Tom Shales
By Heaven, these further adventures of C.S. Forester's famous fictional lieutenant in the British navy are jolly good yarns, adroitly unraveled. The lack of cutting-edge edginess is not a minus but a plus, the simple virtues of solid storytelling celebrated in style.... Returning as hero Hornblower is the indispensable and broodingly handsome Ioan Gruffudd. His most adoring fans will be happy to learn he takes a shower on deck in the second hour and briefly displays his pale Welsh bum....

    Best miniseries of all time!!!

This series keeps getting better and better! I could not believe how high class this is. All the actors are beyond amazing and so perfect for their roles. It is wonderful to see how the characters from Hornblower One develop. This is an absolute MUST SEE! I cannot say enough about these funny, sad, and absolutly touching series.

Another spendid 2 movies - 3 cheers for Mr. Hornblower !

Grown from a boy into a man, Horatio Hornblower is the man to call on in the time of crisis. With their commanding Capt. Sawyer becoming irrational, the officers of the RENOUN ( with Hormblower in the lead) have to take drastic measures to '' do what is best'' and to do their duty to their captain and their King, These movies are extraordinary, exciting and totally breathtaking !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The performances of Ioan Gruffudd especially as well as Paul McGann's, Jamie Bamber and of course David Warner (as the insane Capt.) are outstanding !!! You have to watch it; over and over and over again....

    Awesome Movies!

Wow - I am impressed. Usually sequels are not so great, but with this, I was caught up in the adventure. The plot never slowed down even once.
