This film gave producer Dan Curtis to fully realise his concept; unrestricted by ABC-TV's censorship, Curtis was able to incorporate much more violence, blood, and gore into the vampire story.

House of Dark Shadows is based on the 1960's Soap Opera, Dark Shadows and takes place in the town of Collinsport, Maine, involving the wealthy but seemingly cursed Collins Family. Willie Loomis (John Karlen), a drunk, a drifter, a ne'er do well and the groundskeeper of the Collins estate (aptly named Collinwood) accidentily releases a 150 year old Vampire, Barnabas Collins (Jonathon Frid) from his coffin from a hidden room in the Collins Mausoleum. After forcing Willie to become his slave, Barnabas arrives at Collinwood passing himself off as a cousin from England. Not long afterwards, a series of attacks begins plaguing the town of Collinsport. After getting permission to do so, Barnabas moves into the long vacant Old Mansion of the Collins Family and sets his sights on a young woman by the name of Maggie Evans (Katherine Leigh Scott), whom he believes to be the reincarnation of his long, lost love, Josette DuPre'. During this time, Barnabas attacks and eventually kills Carolyn Stoddard (Nancy Barrett), daughter of Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Joan Bennett). Carolyn rises from her tomb to batten down upon her lover, but before she can finish him off, is discovered and confronted by the Police and then destroyed by the traditional stake thru the heart. Seeking to find the Killer, a phlebotomist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Grayson Hall) is called in to assist with Forensic Evidence. While at Collinwood, she discovers the secret of Barnabas Collins when she notices he casts no reflection in a mirror. Realizing that he has been found out he makes plans to murder her, but Julia offers him a chance at being human again by treating Barnabas with a syrum which could cure him of his Vampire curse. As Barnabas is able to walk in the daylight for the first time in 150 years, he shows his gratitude to Julia and Julia falls in love with him. When she suddenly discovers that Barnabas is in love with Maggie, she gives him an overdose of the syrum in a fit of jealousy. The efffect is quite horrific. Barnabas reverts to his true age, 150 years old and is once again a vampire!!! Finding Julia in the process of packing her things for a quick getaway, he realizes she has betrayed him and strangles her to death....just as Elizabeth and Maggie come into the room. Elizabeth flees while Barnabas attacks Maggie, so soon becomes young looking again from the infusion of Maggie's blood. Barnabas takes Maggie back to the Old House and puts her in a coffin, ready to make her his undead bride. Willie and Maggie's lover rush to the rescue but will they be in time to save Maggie and destroy Barnabas?
