Overview

This Dr. Seuss/Chuck Jones collaboration has become a holiday classic for families around the world. Paired with the bonus feature Horton Hears a Who!, the DVD makes for a package that fans of any age can appreciate. The standard format presentation of the two titles is the original, intended aspect ratio, since both titles were made for television. The video quality is more than acceptable, but the print used for How the Grinch Stole Christmas shows signs of wear. Colors across both titles are generally translated well, and no digital flaws distract from viewers' enjoyment. The music and sound for Horton Hears a Who! seem to have aged better when it comes to preservation of the original elements. The dialogue, narration, and musical numbers in How the Grinch Stole Christmas don't seem to convey a full, dynamic range (fans might remember Boris Karloff's narration sounding more ominous many years ago). The bonus features provide little of interest. The "Scene Selections" menus allow instant access to all 16 chapters of both titles (32 in all). The "Pencil Tests" show only three drawings from each title and are big disappointments. The Grinch Trivia Test is a short, for-kids-only affair, presented in a hard-to-read typeface. The "Trivia" section, which should really be called "Biographies," gives brief biographies of Chuck Jones, Dr. Seuss, Boris Karloff, and June Foray. Fans and newcomers alike will be thrilled with this DVD, but anyone looking for supplemental material will have to search elsewhere.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Kryssa Schemmerling
For generations of children, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without the Grinch -- the annual viewing of this animated favorite, based on Dr. Seuss's children's book and narrated in inimitable style by Boris Karloff, has become as much a part of the holidays as trimming the tree. The grumpy old Grinch, an anti-Santa with "a heart two sizes too small," decides to steal Christmas from the cheerful little inhabitants of Whoville, but discovers to his surprise that to the Whos, Christmas means more than just presents and holiday trappings. Also included is Horton Hears a Who, in which Horton the elephant champions tolerance when he defends Whoville, the tiny, alternative universe he finds inside a daisy. Bringing Dr. Seuss's singular images to animated life is no mean feat. But Chuck Jones, animator of such cartoon legends as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the Road Runner, renders Dr. Seuss's eye-catching, tongue-twisting stories perfectly, creating a pair of animated classics with the visual and thematic depth to endure many joyful annual visits from children and adults alike.

    How The Grinch Stole Christmas

It wouldn't be Christmas without watching the "Grinch" every year. My family loves this movie.

This disc is a cinch you can’t go wrong with the Grinch!

"How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is a Christmas classic that usually receives repeated viewings in my household. The Grinch is a timeless tale of tolerance, discised as a fantasy. It's the perfect way to put your Little Cindy Lou Who to bed on Christmas Eve, or any night of the year. "Hurton Hears A Who" is another delightful story, which will be especially popular with animal lovers. The animated adaptations of these two stories are a "hateful" of fun! Here's more on each of the shorts, because a person is a person no matter how small and you deserve some good protect information. You can keep your Frosty the Snowman, Rudoplh the Red Nosed Reindeer, Muppet Christmas, and all the rest. Just let me have my Grinch. Quite simply, this is the best movie that money can buy- a wonderful gift and you never can have too many Grinch movies. Any family should own this movie. After all, who can resist this tale of selfishness conquered by love? Not me, that's for sure. I refuse to see the Jim Carrey version nothing can top this Dr. Seuss masterpiece. Not even Hollywood. The Grinch is a mean one, and your kids will think YOU'RE mean if you don't stuff their stocking with this. It's collectively a perfect disc, and kids will be excited to hear that the soundtracks to both films appear unabridged on a single disc. This is a very special DVD release sure to satisfy the ones who aren't getting a lump of coal this year....
