Often harassed by local boys, one day Sophie is unexpectedly befriended by Howl, a strange but flamboyant wizard whose large home can travel under its own power. Sophie takes shelter in Howl's castle, and attempts to find a way to reverse the witch's spell with the help of Calcifer, a subdued but powerful demon who exists in the form of fire, and Markl, who protects the four-way door which can instantly take visitors to other lands and dimensions. Howl's Moving Castle was released in North America by Walt Disney Pictures, who distributed the film both in its original Japanese and in a dubbed English version; the English-speaking voice cast includes Christian Bale, Emily Mortimer, Jean Simmons, Lauren Bacall, and Billy Crystal. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Hayao Miyazaki, the Orson Welles of anime, demonstrates his mastery of this storytelling form yet again with a vivid, exciting yarn that blends adventure, romance, fantasy, and science fiction. It gets underway when 18-year-old Sophie Hatter, cursed by the Witch of the Waste, is transformed into an old hag. Ashamed of her appearance, Sophie flees into the nearby countryside, where a moving castle owned by a handsome young wizard drifts across the hills. She befriends the fire demon Calcifer, who promises to lift the curse if she helps liberate him from the influence of Howl, the wizard. Dreamlike almost to the point of surrealism, Howl's Moving Castle doesn't have a particularly intricate plot, nor does it offer much by way of character development. But it's beautifully designed and deceptively simple in terms of emotional resonance. Miyazaki manipulates the elements of anime better than just about anyone else; he presents supernatural surroundings and phenomena with unusual sensitivity, and in this film he creates a fairy-tale environment that enhances the story and moves the viewer in subtle ways.

    Love this movie

I had to watch it online first before I bought it, but now I'm glad I have my own copy. Miyazaki films are some of my favorite ever since I saw Kiki's Delivery Service when I was little. The story isn't just great, but the characters and artwork is always beautiful as is the music. It's not a movie to get bored of.

    Miyazki's works are beautiful

These movies captivate my dad (who usually doesn't shut up when you're trying to watch something but he was oh so quiet during 'Spirited Away') and I. The animation itself is beautiful and you become so immersed in the world that you forget where you are. I haven't seen this one yet but I can't wait to see it.

    Another Studio Ghibli Triumph

This was an excellent movie--as usual for Miyazaki-sensei. Also, as a fan of the book, I enjoyed how the movie was much different without sacrificing the awesomeness in any way. Artistic, amusing, thoroughly enjoyable fantasy. Another definite plus: the English voice acting is actually good. Justify watching it over and over again by reminding everyone you know that it was nominated for an Oscar.

    Miyazaki has done it again!

Hayao Miyazaki is a GOD of anime. His characters are so real and belivable, and this movie is no exception! It's amazing, the storyline is great, and there's wonderful animation (all to be expected of Miyazaki-sama). Howl's Moving Castle is a Miyazaki masterpiece you don't want to miss!

This Is A Movie Everyone Should See.

Because of its anti-war message, I believe that everyone should see it. Think of it: if everyone saw it, we might come to a quicker decision about Iraq (meaning no offense to the government). Just my thought. Anyway, this movie is so good! I loved every single thing about it. When I saw it in theatres, it was everything I hoped it to be, and more.

    Brilliant book, brilliant film

This movie was touching, gorgeously animated, and incredibly entertaining. The American voicework is amazing and Miyazaki created a fascinating storyline out of an equally wonderful (but very different) book. This is a must see

    Awesome

Amazing. The animation is outstanding, clearly Miyazaki's best work. The story is charming, and the characters captivating. There was nothing I didn't like about it. I can't wait till it comes out on March 7.

    A Must-See for any Family

Oh how this movie differs from it's book counterpart, however in an excellent way! The plot is rich in that any person of any age will find themselves wanting to finish it. The characters are great as well as the dialogue (though at times, it seems like the english dub was pushing it a little with the translation). I would reccommend watching it both in English and Japanese, the Japanese lines up with the book more. Billy Crystal did Calcifer's personality justice. Anime fans will love it (if they haven't seen it) but the great thing about Miyazaki films is you don't have to be an anime fan to enjoy the great story telling, it lives up to any Disney movie!

    One of my favorites.

I found the English dub version to have a slightly cheesy script and the voices didn't seem to match the characters. I could only stand a few minutes of the English version. However I have loved the original ( Japanese) version since I first saw it years ago. I love the characters, plot, theme, and animation. I have watched it countless times and plan on watching it countless more.

Beautiful and so fun to watch

Once again Hayao Miyazaki has given us a beautiful film. I like the way he blends so many elements (adventure, science fiction, romance, humor, fantasy, moral lesson) into his films and this one is no different. If you are an anime fan, I highly recommend this film, as well as any of his other works. (Although, if you truly are an anime fan, then I do not even have to recommend this to you because you already know.) The story draws you in and the animation is stunningly beautiful. He is the best at what he does, in my opinion.

    Stunning Movie

This movie is an incredible adaptation of a fantastic story. I will admit that when I watched it the first time, I began with low expectations. The quick and witty dialog coupled with the moving score captured my attention and I deeply enjoyed the show. I simply cannot get over how inspiring the score is for this movie! If you enjoy a fun movie and good music, be prepared to LOVE this movie.

    Beautiful Anti-War Fantasy Movie!

This is a very beautiful fantasy movie. It's well done and has both an excellent story and a good message (anti-war). Sophie is a young girl in a country at war. She gets accosted by some soldiers and meets a wizard (Howl). She then gets put under a spell by a jealous old witch who truns Sophie into a 90-year-old woman. (But a very spry and healthy 90!) Sophie seeks a cure for the spell and becomes a cleaning lady for Howl. She moves into his castle (which really does move on legs!). Eventually she is cured of the spell, falls in love with Howl and helps the fire demon Calcifer.
Hayao Miyazaki puts a very strong anti-war message in this movie. He depicts war as death, destruction, waste (of lives, materials and money) and corruption (soldiers becoming mashers and potential rapists, Howl becoming physically a monster, other wizards becoming true monsters, and the government continuing a war for no good reason). No one escapes the war unscathed. Everybody suffers. And in the end, nothing is gained or decided.
Best recommended for older children and adults. Young kids will like the scenes at the castle and the magics, but may be put off or even frightened by the scenes of destruction and bombing. The anti-war message makes a good starting point for discussion with older kids and teens about what war is really like and what it really does to everyone involved.
