A magnificent film that typifies post-WW II Japanese film making. Absolutely no attempt at whitewashing Japanese behavior in Asia - in stark contrast to current efforts to blame the West for Japanese misbehavior. At the same time, the movie portrays the haplessness of decent humans caught in a vicious political and economic system.
