Humphrey Bogart - The Signature Collection, Vol. 1

( 4 )

Overview

One of the most beloved American films, this captivating wartime adventure of romance and intrigue from director Michael Curtiz defies standard categorization. Simply put, it is the story of Rick Blaine Humphrey Bogart, a world-weary ex-freedom fighter who runs a nightclub in Casablanca during the early part of WWII. Despite pressure from the local authorities, notably the crafty Capt. Renault Claude Rains, Rick's caf? has become a haven for refugees looking to purchase illicit letters of transit which will allow...

Simply put, it is the story of Rick Blaine Humphrey Bogart, a world-weary ex-freedom fighter who runs a nightclub in Casablanca during the early part of WWII. Despite pressure from the local authorities, notably the crafty Capt. Renault Claude Rains, Rick's café has become a haven for refugees looking to purchase illicit letters of transit which will allow them to escape to America. One day, to Rick's great surprise, he is approached by the famed rebel Victor Laszlo Paul Henreid and his wife Ilsa Ingrid Bergman, Rick's true love who deserted him when the Nazis invaded Paris. She still wants Victor to escape to America, but now that she's renewed her love for Rick, she wants to stay behind in Casablanca. "You must do the thinking for both of us," she says to Rick. He does, and his plan brings the story to its satisfyingly logical, if not entirely happy, conclusion.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
This box set collects four terrific movies starring the incomparable Humphrey Bogart, the craggy-faced, raspy-voiced character actor who became one of Hollywood’s most enduring stars by virtue of his acting ability and charisma. Three of these four films are true classics. High Sierra (1941), in which Bogart actually took second billing to Ida Lupino, cast the longtime Warner Bros. contract player as aging, weary gangster “Mad Dog” Earle -- a role reportedly turned down by every leading man to whom it was offered. Bogie revealed his acting range with his measured portrayal of a killer whose soft-heartedness eventually proves his undoing. Casablanca (1943)…well, what can we say about Casablanca that hasn’t already been said? It may well be the definitive Humphrey Bogart vehicle, and it’s certainly attained iconic status in American popular culture. The version included in this box is the recently restored Special Edition, which sports numerous extras including never-before-seen footage cut prior to the film’s release. Bogie took a big chance for a star of his stature by playing an unsympathetic character in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), but his performance as obsessed gold prospector Fred C. Dobbs is arguably the most finely nuanced of his entire career. This too appears here in its recent Special Edition incarnation, outfitted with a variety of well-chosen supplements. They Drive by Night (1940) initially alerted astute critics that Bogart was becoming a screen force to be reckoned with. A suspenseful drama about truck drivers that pairs him with George Raft (who, incidentally, turned down the star-making roles Bogie took in both High Sierra and The Maltese Falcon), it nonetheless falls a bit short of the admittedly high mark set by its three companions in this essential collection.
