Overview

Kim Basinger stars in this film based on the life and work of Kuki Gallmann. As a child, Kuki visited Africa with her family and became fascinated with the beauty of its land and wildlife. Years later, at the age of 25, Kuki returned to Africa with her husband, Paolo Vincent Perez, and their young son, Emanuele Liam Aiken. Kuki and Paolo built a ranch and developed a passionate interest in protecting the endangered wildlife of the region, such as elephants and rhinos. However, while Africa was a place of beauty and wonder for Kuki, it was also full of danger and tragedy, and when Paolo is unexpectedly killed, Kuki is left alone to fend for Emanuele and her unborn child in this spectacular but unforgiving landscape. I Dreamed of Africa was directed by Academy Award-winner Hugh Hudson and also features Robert Loggia and Eva Marie Saint.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Virginia McCollam
Academy Award-winning director Hugh Hudson Chariots of Fire explores primitive landscapes and dark nights of the soul in this exquisitely rendered film. Based on Kuki Gallmann's autobiography, it is the story of a woman's transcendence and salvation as she moves from the material world of her young adulthood in Italy toward a difficult but more rewarding existence in the heart of Africa. Kim Basinger is effectively understated as Gallmann, a character beset by horrendous tragedies culminating in the deaths of her husband and a son. She manages to breathe emotional truth into Galmann's central dilemma: should she accept the comfort and security of her life in Europe, with its implied spiritual death, or embrace rural Africa's invigorating chaos. Vincent Perez and Eva Marie Saint, as Gallmann's husband and mother, also give strong, compelling performances. Like Out of Africa, I Dream of Africa captures, in both story and image, the complicated allure of a still-mysterious continent.

    Fantastic movie w/great actors

A heart warming, emotional movie. I love movies based on true life stories. I watch it every time it comes on HBO. I decided to see if I could see if the movie was available for purchase, and it is. If you have a chance to see this movie, Do..you won't regret it.

A moving and compelling true story of a woman's determination

I purchased Kuki Gallmann's book while on safari in Kenya in 1992. It is a well-written book of deep passion for this magnificant continent amid her personal tragedies. To turn this book into a movie would take extraordinary vision and application of the elements. Kim Basinger did a wonderful job portraying a woman compelled to rise above her tragedies. Today, Kuki Gallmann fights for the survial of the animal population on her ranch and I quite envy her!! I would do so myself if in the same circumstances. A beautifully portrayed movie for a land of contrasting beauty beyond description. A woman of strength, boundless determination and to carry on through it all makes this worth five stars.
