Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
More first-season I Love Lucy fun can be found in this second Season 1 volume, which includes Episodes 4 through 7 from the legendary sitcom's debut run. "Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying to Murder Her" was actually the first official episode filmed not counting the pilot, and it finds Lucy convinced -- through a typical sitcom misunderstanding -- that Ricky is planning to do away with her. "The Quiz Show" has Lucy and Ethel scrambling to win some cash on a TV game show after Ricky cuts off Lucy's allowance. "The Audition" is a remake of the series' unaired pilot, with Lucy butting in on Ricky's big TV audition. And in "The Séance," Lucy and Ethel have a little fun with a Ouija board. Lucille Ball and husband Desi Arnaz are, of course, Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, while William Frawley and Vivian Vance play their neighbors and best friends, Fred and Ethel Mertz. The hilarious dynamics of this quartet are already firmly established in these early episodes. And while the notion of a marriage wherein the wife earns an "allowance" seems quaint, Lucy's drive for equality in the partnership leaves little doubt that it's ultimately futile to resist her will. She's a force of nature, and even from these early shows, it's easy to see why I Love Lucy changed the face of American television. The DVD includes flubs, a behind-the-scenes audio featurette, and radio shows.
