Overview

I Love Lucy: Season One, Volume Three's most noteworthy supplements are two radio shows that inspired two of the included episodes. Both originate from My Favorite Husband, a series starring Lucille Ball and Richard Denning as Liz and George Cooper. This volume's episodes are also notable for including several moments excised in rerun airings. "The Christmas Tag" is a three-minute scene that shows the four stars singing with a surprise guest. The censors cracked down on "The Long, Long Kiss," which showcased Desi Arnaz and Ball in an extended lip lock. A mention of sponsor Philip Morris also disappeared in subsequent television airings. Finally, many restored musical intros have been reintroduced to the series. A separate section contains the original opening that spotlighted Philip Morris over the actual series. This release offers an impressive restored version of the series' original black-and-white, full-frame transfer. A decent amount of minor defects do arise, but the picture looks surprisingly good. It represents a significant improvement over the version seen on television reruns. The technology of 1951 obviously limited what the restorers could do with this transfer, but it succeeds in offering a clear presentation. It is no major surprise that this disc provides only mono transfers for each episode. Each one is definitely limited, but the audio remains clear and understandable throughout the shows.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
More first-season I Love Lucy fun can be found in this third Season 1 volume, which includes Episodes 8 through 11 from the legendary sitcom's debut run. "Men are Messy" has Lucy divide the apartment in half, allowing Ricky to be a slob on his side. In "The Fur Coat," Ricky brings home a fur coat from the club and Lucy assumes it's hers. "Lucy is Jealous of Girl Dancer" finds Lucy battling the green-eyed monster when she reads a gossip article about Ricky. And in "Drafted," Lucy and Ethel become convinced that Fred and Ricky have been drafted. Lucille Ball and husband Desi Arnaz are, of course, Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, while William Frawley and Vivian Vance play their neighbors and best friends, Fred and Ethel Mertz. The hilarious dynamics of this quartet are already firmly established in these early episodes. And while the notion of a marriage wherein the wife earns an "allowance" seems quaint, Lucy's drive for equality in the partnership leaves little doubt that it's ultimately futile to resist her will. She's a force of nature, and even from these early shows, it's easy to see why I Love Lucy changed the face of American television. The DVD includes flubs, a behind-the-scenes audio featurette, and radio shows.
