Overview

Matching the other DVD volumes of the series, I Love Lucy: Season One, Volume Four offers a clear transfer that is a significant improvement over any VHS versions. The picture does contain some minor defects due to its significant age, but they cause few notable problems. The full-frame, black-and-white images are clear and generally effective. This disc also includes a mono transfer that corresponds with expectations for this type of release. The dialogue and music are both easily understandable, which is all one can really want from this type of audio track. The sounds are extremely centralized, but they lack the muddled nature sometimes evident on older television transfers. Volume Four offers slightly less extras than the preceding release, but it still includes several notable features. The most interesting is the entire My Favorite Husband radio show for the Valentine's Day episode, which inspired the television Lucy Plays Cupid entry. It stars Lucille Ball and Richard Denning as Liz and George Cooper in a generic-sounding radio sitcom. Also included is a three-minute behind-the-scenes featurette entitled "Rehearsing the Pilot." It contains a reading of the initial ideas for the show and also presents some production photographs. The remaining supplements include the series' original Philip Morris-dominated opening, a guest cast list (with bios), and several minor flubs.

More first-season I Love Lucy fun can be found in this fourth Season 1 volume, which includes Episodes 12 through 15 from the legendary sitcom's debut run. "The Adagio" has Lucy taking Parisian dance lessons with designs on joining Ricky's club act. In "The Benefit," Lucy yearns to join Ricky in a musical benefit. In "The Amateur Hour," Lucy baby-sits twins who are preparing to appear on a variety show. And "Lucy Plays Cupid" is a bungled case of matchmaking when Lucy tries to find a love connection for her neighbor Miss Lewis. Lucille Ball and husband Desi Arnaz are, of course, Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, while William Frawley and Vivian Vance play their neighbors and best friends, Fred and Ethel Mertz. The hilarious dynamics of this quartet are already firmly established in these early episodes. Ball is a force of nature as always, and even from these early shows, it's easy to see why I Love Lucy changed the face of American television. The DVD includes flubs, a behind-the-scenes audio featurette, and radio shows.
