Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
There's a reason why this one is commonly described as a "cult classic": its smallish audience has maxed out and will not grow beyond the number of admirers it has now. I Spit on Your Grave, like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Last House on the Left, will never have the semi-mainstream audience of Night of the Living Dead or Sam Raimi's Evil Dead series because it is too gut-wrenching for the public at large. Look at what happens to poor Jennifer (played with total realistic abandon by Camille Keaton, who made a few B-movies before vanishing in 1989). The harrowing, near-pornographic torture she is put through for the first 30 minutes is excruciating to watch, and to do so requires a degree of third-person sadism few people will willfully admit to. It's disturbing as anything committed to celluloid. But it's all done to set up the revenge motif, and boy does it work. When Jennifer regains her strength and sets out to even the score, it is impossible not to respond with an authentic adrenaline rush of one's own. Shot on a budget of about 87 cents on leftover film stock seemingly hand-cranked through an antique camera, I Spit on Your Grave makes other low-budget independent horror films that came after it seem quaint. While its audience numbers may not expand, it will always remain stable because there is always another crop of budding horror fans who have heard of its reputation and will go out of their way to find out what everyone in their circle is talking about. And once they see it, they'll never forget it.

    A reviewer

I think I spit on your grave is powerful and wakes you up about life and women when raped changes you on the inside.I'm happy she hunts them down and they get pay back for the demonic and ruthless rape and beaten and cut up of this lovely young lady, thank god its only a movie but this kind of thing is going on day to day to women and little children to,this is a must to watch and very deep and moving to the heart and mind its self, you have to open your eyes the real life people.

    to the person below

you make valid points... but did you know this was only a movie? it's not based on true facts and i know this does happen maybe not to the limit like in the movie. but if you were raped like that would you wait for our failed legal system to wait for a trial to waste your time sitting home while someone bails hims out?? not me i would kill the bastard or bastards like she did even worse. she did what all woman would do in that situation, go out of blood... but it's a movie and i'm sure the movie would be boring had she gone to court and did it the legal way.. no one would be talking about this movie.. it would be boring... remember not all movies need to be up to date with what you would do in reality... thats what we watch movies.. entertainment value.

    Does this benefit our society?

A rather licentious friend of mine once recommended this movie to me. I have done a lot of work at my University in sexual assault prevention and awareness. I agree that the legal system is flawed and that there needs to be more dialogue on fixing this problem. "I Spit On Your Grave" is maybe the wrong direction for this dialogue. I had to fast forward past the rape because it was so graphic. The revenge, while justified, was automatic and didn't focus on the social reasons why this woman couldn't receive a conviction against her rapists. Over all, this movie fails to provide a beneficial social commentary and is more interested in arousing the worst aspects of our society and in fact I believe encourages the mentality that leads to rape.

    Sick

This is one of the most disgusting movies I have ever seen. It is explicit and degrades women. I do not advise it.
