I Spy, Vol. 1

Overview

Image has set about releasing all three seasons of this series, four episodes to a disc, 82 episodes in all (which means two left over to deal with, but that's Image's problem). The discs are dual-layered, running approximately 204 minutes each, with non-animated main and chapter menus as well as a full-motion opening. The first volume includes the original pilot episode, "Affair in T'Sien Cha, as well as three additional episodes: "Carry Me Back to Old Tsing Tao, "A Cup of Kindness, and "Danny Was a Million ...

The first volume includes the original pilot episode, "Affair in T'Sien Cha, as well as three additional episodes: "Carry Me Back to Old Tsing Tao, "A Cup of Kindness, and "Danny Was a Million Laughs." Image has used the best sources they could find, and done some work on them, though not, perhaps, as much as might have been helpful. The Dolby Digital Mono Sound is very good, especially considering the age and source, with a good frequency and dynamic range. High and low ranges are, of course, very moderate, but overall the soundtrack is quite acceptable, treating both the jazzy score and the dialogue very nicely. The image quality is a bit more variable. "Affair in T'Sien Cha" has some startling color balance shifts in places, and the print shows some blemishes and scratches from time to time -- whether these are artifacts from the original shoot (which was plagued by equipment problems in Hong Kong) or just print damage is an open question. The transfer also shakes occasionally -- either a transfer issue or video showing problems -- either way, this shaky image problem occurs in other episodes as well -- briefly, but just enough to annoy. The full-frame image is lacking a little in contrast at times, but this can be attributed to the source. Again, considering the age and production methods, the image looks good, with generally good color balance and usually accurate flesh tones -- the aforementioned color timing glitches being the exception rather than the rule. Blacks are generally solid, and there seems to be little in the way of compression artifacts or edge enhancement. The image is fairly sharp (a few of the exteriors show some softness, though this is, again, a source issue), with little or no grain evident. All in all, from a technical standpoint, a good deal. The disc has 24 chapters (six for each episode) and is packaged in a snapper case.
