Bowers is chosen for the assignment because he is statistically the most average man in the Army, while Rita is a hooker ordered to do some community service; however, Bowers and Rita are forgotten when the military base where the experiment took place is closed down, and when they wake up in the year 2505, Bowers finds himself living in a society where intelligence has taken such a landslide he's now the smartest man in the world. Can Bowers save America from its own remarkable stupidity, and he can he get the dunderheads around him to believe what he says? Produced under the title 3001, Idiocracy also stars Dax Shepard as Bowers's numb-skull lawyer, Stephen Root as a judge, and Terry Crews as Camacho, a former porn star and professional wrestler who is now president of the United States.

Beavis and Butt-head creator Mike Judge's 1999 live-action feature film, Office Space, tanked at the box office but quickly built a following on video and DVD, earning cult-classic status and whetting his audience's appetite for more feature films. Still, the studio shelved this long-awaited follow-up -- a futuristic satire depicting a hilariously dumbed-down America -- for over a year before slipping it out for a brief, unpublicized theatrical run. Despite the studio's lack of confidence, fans have nothing to worry about -- Idiocracy delivers the goods. It begins in the present with career serviceman Joe Bowers Luke Wilson, an essentially lazy guy biding his time in uniform for the pension to come, being chosen as a guinea pig for an army experiment in cryogenics. Frozen along with a hooker named Rita Maya Rudolph, Joe is forgotten in the aftermath of a base shutdown and thawed out some 500 years later. By this time, American society has devolved so precipitously that he and Rita are the smartest people in the country. Think of it as Planet of the Butt-heads. Most of the laughs, and there are many, derive from Judge's extrapolations of current social trends: In this Brave New World, the crops are watered with energy drink "It has the electrolytes plants crave!"; lawyers attain their degrees from Costco; the president is a wrestling champ; and the most popular TV show is Ow! My Balls! In its way, Idiocracy equals in foreboding the widely hailed documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Only it does so with a smile.

Mike Judge fans prepare to breathe a deep sigh of relief -- Idiocracy isn't anywhere near the Run Ronnie Run-level disaster that many likely suspected when 20th Century Fox unceremoniously dumped it into a handful of theaters in the cinematic winter wasteland of 2006. Those looking for a sharp jab of Judge-style satire are sure to stay amused as the keen social critic behind Office Space and King of the Hill targets everything from television and film to fast food, politics, medical care, consumerism, and perhaps most pointedly, the dialectical speech patterns of a future generation reared on such moronic hit television programs as "Ow! My Balls!" Of course, this isn't to say that Idiocracy is bulletproof when it comes to criticism -- the narration is somewhat clunky and the at-times awkward editing reeks of post-production tampering among other minor issues -- just that those who are tuned in to Judge's playfully profane sense of satire the Starbucks of the future offers "full release" lattes aren't likely to stop chuckling long enough to check their watches during the film's brisk 84 minutes. While certain setups don't necessarily pay off as well as one might expect given Judge's impressive track record, the steady stream of jokes and visual gags fly frequently enough to at the very least merit a second viewing on a rainy day. As for the performances, leads Luke Wilson and Maya Rudolph respectably hold their own as the dimwitted military man and incredulous prostitute who make their way through a future that has collapsed due to its own stupidity, while supporting performances by Dax Shepard as Costco-educated lawyer Frito and Terry Alan Crews as President Camacho a spandex-clad bird-flipper whose Chief Executive qualifications include being a professional wrestler/porno star nearly steal the show. To suspect that 20th Century Fox's shameful treatment of the film is due more to fear of offending the numerous highly profitable franchises which Judge targets with merciless abandon than the failure of the film as a whole may not be too far off considering the glee with which the writer/director cuts down a virtual cornucopia of corporate monoliths, and while it's impossible to tell whether Idiocracy will worm its way into the public conscience as effectively as Office Space -- an unlikely prospect given that general audiences simply don't have the reference points to relate to sci-fi humor as closely as they can cubicle-farm humor -- chances are that they'll still find plenty to laugh about.

    What If?

    Imagine a world like that, Oh! I think it already started! It would not surprise me that in some years from now, the world would be as shown in the movie. LOL. CMC.

    Really, really funny

    OK, this is not the type of movie that I would usually watch. It's a bit uneven and some of the the humor is more vulgar than I usually prefer. I found this movie on cable and passed over it about 2 dozen times before I actually watched it. Once I gave it a chance, it is really, really funny. There are some genuinely hilarious bits and now we just can't stop laughing about them. I subsequently did a little research and read that Mike Judge's film was shelved by Fox and then given a very limited release and basically no opportunity to succeed. I think Judge did a really good job skewering corporate greed and the dumbing down of society and I'd love to see his director's cut some day. I was at a Super Bowl party last night with a few 16 - 25 years olds and their parent. We started discussing movies and this one came up. To my surprise, nearly everyone had seen it and we all think this film is really funny and worth watching.

    Don't even bother...

    After reading the synopsis, I was eager to rent the movie. After 40 minutes of watching the movie, I had to turn it off. I couldn't even bring myself to finish the movie. Poorly written. Horrible casting. Not smart. Not worth your time. If you're looking for satire that pokes fun at corporate america, society, and politics, look elsewhere. Even if you're a fan of Mike Judge, you'll be dissapointed with this film.

    Beautifully overdramatic

    I was expecting something more along the lines of Office Space as a satire, but this is not like that at all. It is almost sort of a adventure movie complete with dramatic voice-over. The future dystopia Judge created isn't supposed to be completely plausible. He just uses every idea about where commercialism and society degrades and takes them to an absurd level. This movie is supposed to be ridiculous and certain scenes had me laughing to tears. Office Space is more accesible becuase most people understand that environment so well. If you're one of those people that gets annoyed at our consumer culture this movie will crack you up.

    Mike Judge = Master Satirist

    Just see it. Nobody has skewered corporate america this bad and gotten away with it. Heck, Mike Judge didn't get away with it, Fox buried this movie. Not the funniest movie ever but still a must-see, and if you are a Judge fan (King of the Hill, Beavis & Butthead, Office Space) it's time.

    What was this? I mean, the first 30 minutes or so are funny but once we get to the future it gets really stupid and just not funny.
