Overview

Businessman Edmund Gilbert Edmund Gwenn and his daughter Lilian Wendy Barrie are a well-to-do father and daughter caught in the down-draft of the British economic depression -- he's a financier without finance, and they're both struggling to put on a big front as their resources disappear. When Paul Martin (Robert Donat), a once-wealthy young man trying to survive as an employee of the gas-works, shows up to turn off their utilities, it seems like the end -- but Paul takes a fancy to Lilian and decides to leave their gas and power on. And Mr. Gilbert suddenly takes a fancy to Paul when the younger man discovers that an escaping thief who bumped into him on the underground has left $100,000 on Paul's person. Now Edmund wants the young man as his partner in a new venture, to attract other investors, and matters become more comically complicated still as the byzantine world of romance and finance intertwine.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Bruce Eder
A true rarity in British cinema of its era, For Love Or Money (originally titled Cash) is an near-screwball style comedy, before that sub-genre had even been spawned in America, where it supposedly originated. Even more astonishingly, it was the work of director Zoltan Korda, a renowned maker of action/adventure films whose credentials in comedy were decidedly narrow. Robert Donat and Wendy Barrie make a delightful screen couple, trading overt barbs and sub rosa affections as the plot, built on a series of misunderstandings and false assumptions rolls forward relentlessly, Edmund Gwenn providing still more comical set-ups as Barrie's manically obsessive entrepreneur father. The pacing would be frenetic by American standards, and for a British picture of the period it's a minor miracle, and one well worth tracking down by modern viewers. And that goes double for anyone who appreciates a joke perpetrated at the expense of single-minded capitalists (who populate a big part of this movie) -- the "cash" of the title proves to be less than what it seems, while people's reactions to it are so outsized as to be ridiculous, and point up some of the more absurd aspects of modern capitalism and investment, all lessons that seem more pointed and piercing in the twenty-first century.
