Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
Tom Selleck stars as Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower in this A&E production that chronicles the 90 days leading up to the most important military maneuver in U.S. history -- D-Day, June 6, 1944. Selleck must put aside his easygoing Magnum P.I. persona to capture the man that was to later serve as president, and he does so, admirably portraying Ike as a man who must remain strong despite the many deaths that are to occur as a result of his command decisions. Light on actual battle scenes, Ike is more about the political ramifications that surrounded the invasion. Ian Mune stands out as Prime Minister Winston Churchill, while Gerald McRaney has very little to do as Gen. George S. Patton in a small part. Selleck is also well supported by Timothy Bottoms as Walter Bedell "Beetle" Smith, James Remar as Gen. Omar Bradley, and Bruce Phillips as Gen. Bernard Montgomery. Ike is an excellent study of the man and his pivotal role in ending World War II and provides Selleck fans a chance to see him in a meaty, standout performance.
