When Detective Malloy Mark Ruffalo comes to her apartment to interview her about a neighborhood murder, she becomes intensely attracted to him. Although they are not sure if they can completely trust each other, Frannie and Malloy start up a passionate love affair. Meanwhile, the killer remains on the loose and the list of suspects includes Malloy's partner, Rodriguez Nick Damici, and Frannie's student Cornelius Sharrieff Pugh. Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as Frannie's half-sister, Pauline. In the Cut was shown at the 2003 Toronto Film Festival.

Meg Ryan sheds her perky, girl-next-door image for good with this gripping erotic thriller, directed with style and panache by Jane Campion. Ryan portrays Fran Thorstin, a lonely, 30-something college professor who embarks on a most unlikely affair with a coarse police detective named Malloy Mark Ruffalo. Malloy is supposedly investigating a sex murder in Thorstin’s New York neighborhood, but when the cop begins acting strangely, she starts to doubt his sincerity. The story is rather tawdry and not at all the type of material you'd think a filmmaker with Campion’s art house credentials would be drawn to, but she does a fine job capturing both the gritty Manhattan milieu and the erotically charged coupling of Ryan and Ruffalo. Ultimately, the solution to the murder mystery is less important than Thorstin’s personal odyssey, as she abandons her humdrum routine to adopt a strikingly different and potentially dangerous course of behavior. Her journey is all the more compelling thanks to Ryan's performance, the most eye-opening turn this actress has delivered in years.

Few directors have attempted to revive the '70s psycho-sexual thriller with the vigor that Jane Campion does in In the Cut, her uneven but adventurous first stab at genre filmmaking. Say what you will about the film -- overheated, grisly, riddled with plot holes -- it's never tentative. Heroine Meg Ryan isn't portrayed as a schoolmarm-in-the-woods type exploring the dangerous and threatening world of big-city sexuality so much as she's a grown woman trying to narrow the sometimes-imperceptible gap between desire and self-respect. Her scenes with Mark Ruffalo play up the threat that lurks just beneath the surface of his character's slouchy machismo, and they're riveting: The two have a strange kind of anti-chemistry that prevents In the Cut from devolving into another cautionary tale about the perils of female lust. The adaptation's stock thriller template -- replete with a ersatz-Silence of the Lambs ending -- just about does in the production in its last act. But even as she provides a tidy resolution, Campion refuses to suggest that all is well in the world of male-female courtship.

    Hot Hot Hot!

    I really liked this movie. I have a whole new perspective when watching Ryan and Ruffalo act. I usually can guess the ending and view other movies as very predictable, but not this one. Never saw it coming. Loved the seductive scenes between Ryan and Ruffalo. It just makes you want to keep watching!!

    Hot and delivers just enough steam!

    I really liked this movie. It is one that you really have to pay attention to, but if you do you will be well rewarded. Meg Ryan is fantastic and edgy in a character that is a far departure from her usual sappy roles. Mark Ruffalo is sexual and raw and great in his role as a detective looking for a killer with a distinctive calling card.Their chemistry is explosive. It draws you in and you don't want to let go. Jennifer Jason Leigh is all too real to her role and very believable in her portrayal as a hooker. It is dark and erotic and well directed and I loved it...

    The ambience...the intensity...the honesty

    A great film. Great cinematography. Great story. Loved the complexity of the characters. I dont recommend this film for people who delight in the meaningless Big Hollywood Blockbusters. This movie has substance. And for those who like to be TOLD the plot (as opposed to shown) and like their characters predictable and one-dimentional, your going to HATE this film. This really gives a good look at relationships from a realistic point of view. There's nothing black and white in this film--in any aspect. Its a beautifully told story, presented on a beautiful canvas. Each frame is visually stunning, with colors, shadows, light, etc. I highly recomend this film for anyone who is looking for a movie made in a truly women's point of view and likes their characters human.

    Not all it was cut out to be

    This movie did not deserve the raves reviewers gave it. The scenes are very dark and seem to have no relevance connecting them to the next scene. Meg Ryan's profession as a teacher in the movie was of no importance whatsoever, and the story line was virtually non-existant. The erotic scenes added nothing to the movie's plot and were just a filler for time. "In the Cut" was not worth the time.
