Overview

Award-winning short filmmaker Jessica Yu makes her feature-length debut with In the Realms of the Unreal, a documentary about outsider artist Henry Darger. Born in 1892, Darger lived in Chicago and worked as a janitor for most of his life. When he died in 1972, his landlord found his life's worThe Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion (often simply referred to as The Realms). A massive, multiple-volume fantasy novel, The Realms also contains nearly 300 illustrations of collages, drawings, and paintings. Rather than interview art scholars and psychologists, Yu chooses to look at Darger's work from the viewpoints of those who knew him. Yu also incorporates animation segments into the documentary, using Darger's original images. In the Realms of the Unreal was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 as part of the documentary competition.

Editorial Reviews

Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman
A singular and haunting experience.
New York Times - Dave Kehr
Obscure by nature and unwieldy by design, Darger's work is difficult to confront and consume; Ms. Yu has brought it a little closer, and that is as fine a public service as an art documentary can provide.

This documentary was not what I thought it was going to be, but it was pretty damn good nonetheless. It follows the mysterious life of author/artist Henry Darger, it starts out by explaining his life, how from the very begining he was no ordinary boy. It talks of how he was abused by many of his teachers and supervisors and how this abuse formed the catalist to Darger writing one of the longest novels in the world. It really is quite fasiniating. You can tell that Darger's mind doesn't fit into the discription of normal nor crazy but he is unique. He writes a book about a war fighting to save child labor and abuse. Only in this war it is children against adults. It sounds harsh but it really is hard to explain. Darger's heart was in the right place when he was writing this novel, he wanted to rescue all the children from abusive childhoods like the one he had. Many chapters of the book relate to his own expereinces you will see when the documentary explains his life and complares it to his work. It seems like I'm not explaining this well enough but it really is so hard to put down in words. But I personally found it to be a great documentary and through out the movie you start to understand where Darger is coming from and you realize how sad his life must have been. It really is worth a watch, just be pateint with the first 15 or so minutes. Henry Darger's mind truely is a mystery but in the story of 'In the Realms of the unreal' - you can see what he is trying to say.
