Overview

Indiscretion of an American Wife began life as a romantic melodrama titled Terminal Station. Under the knowing guidance of director Vittorio DeSica, Jennifer Jones and Montgomery Clift are most persuasive as an American housewife and her erstwhile Italian lover. Most of the story takes place in the Rome railway station, where Jones and Clift meet for one last desperate rendezvous, which threatens to expose their illicit affair. Thanks to the intervention of understanding railroad-commissioner Gino Cervi, Jones is permitted to go back to her husband with an unsullied reputation, while Clift goes back to...wherever. The film was a tough shoot, thanks to the lack of rapport between Jennifer Jones and Montgomery Clift and its ever-changing screenplay (several hands worked on the film, including Truman Capote and Cesare Zavattini). The original 120-minute director's cut proved too ponderous for audience consumption, while the 87-minute version prepared by producer David O. Selznick (Jennifer Jones' husband) was deemed unsuitable for American release by the blue-nosed censors of the period. What finally emerged was a 63-minute anecdote, much too short to secure top of the bill bookings. The 87-minute version was restored in 1983, demonstrating that, at base, Indiscretion of an American Wife was a reasonably good little film, laid low by too-many-cooks tinkering, executive indecision and spotty distribution.
