Overview

1987's science fiction
omance/comedy/action Innerspace comes to DVD, with some decent results that will surely please fans. Though the image does occasionally show some grain and signs of wear, those deficiencies are kept in check and the transfer does look surprisingly sharp. The anamorphic 1.85:1 picture displays nice color and generally good detail. Though far from outstanding, there really isn't much to criticize. The sound, on the other hand, isn't very impressive. Remastering a new 5.1 Dolby Digital track was hardly worth the effort. All sound is from the main, front speaker with little use of the sides and virtually no utilization of the surrounds. While dialogue and effects are clear, this type of film could have taken advantage of a far wider sound field, but that simply isn't the case here. In addition to English, there are tracks in French, and strangely enough, Japanese. As for extra material, there is the usual trailer, but more importantly, a wonderfully enthusiastic commentary from director Joe Dante, producer Michael Finnell, costars Kevin McCarthy and Robert Picardo and Visual Effects Supervisor Dennis Murren. They are a lively group, with jokes and interesting facts about the making of the film. Warner can be commended for giving this lesser known film a new life with this nice disc.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Essentially a visually sophisticated update of Robert Fleischer's Fantastic Voyage (1966), Innerspace is a wacky sci-fi treat that looks like oodles of fun for both the performers and the Oscar-winning special effects department. There's something inherently watchable about the "oops, we're headed straight for the gall bladder!" emergencies of this story matter, and it gives Martin Short a license to be physically scattershot -- something the audience doesn't always grant him so willingly. Dennis Quaid's hotshot pilot is key to setting Joe Dante's grinning tone; his wisecracks under duress keep the movie humming along at the level of screwball comedy, in which nothing really bad can happen. The giddy "reality on hold" mindset of Innerspace is a logical offshoot from Dante's Gremlins, though the director is migrating from comic fantasy to fantastic comedy. That he helped direct the episodic parody Amazon Women on the Moon the same year suggests his increasing fondness for the ridiculous. The shrunken production design and weightless sensibilities of Innerspace likely helped inspire Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, which would turn size altering into a franchise two years later.
