Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Get ready for more "wowser" special effects and comical glitches to Inspector Gadget's robotic fantastic arsenal in this produced-for-video sequel to the 1999 box-office hit. This time, French Stewart (Third Rock from the Sun) dons the trench coat originally worn by Matthew Broderick, with Elaine Hendrix (Dennis Quaid's gold-digging fiancée in the Parent Trap remake) adding new layers of technology as G2, an advanced mechanical crime fighter who threatens to make Gadget obsolete. Meanwhile, the evil Claw escapes from prison and hatches his "ten days to success" plot to steal trillions in gold. The hapless and disaster-prone Gadget needs all the help he can get, and it is supplied by his wisecracking Gadgetmobile, his resourceful niece Penny (Caitlin Wachs), and his heroic dog, Brain. In regard to its G-rating, Inspector Gadget 2 is more cartoonish than the first film, with plenty of slapstick and only the mildest of peril. Youngsters will gear up for this, but for all its ingenuity and Stewart's goofy charm, it doesn't quite capture the magic of the original.
All Movie Guide
The most significant thing missing in this sequel from the 1999 original isn't Matthew Broderick as the titular Inspector -- his replacement, squinty-eyed French Stewart is a suitable, if poor man's, replacement. No, the biggest thing missing is Rupert Everett's mincing, menacing meanie, Dr. Claw. This time out, the filmmakers have reverted to the TV cartoon's original conceit of never showing Dr. Claw's face as he tells his ruthless minions what evil things to do. As such, the sequel is less dark and more cartoony, but the under-12 target demographic won't mind too much since there are special effects a'plenty. Elaine Hendrix does what she can in her role as a robot, but could mad scientist Bruce Spence give her a little human warmth next time? The coolest development is Dr. Claw's use of a ray that freezes everyone in town, which affords director Alex Zamm opportunities to have some Clockstoppers-like fun. Parents won't mind watching over their kids' shoulders, but they won't like it as much as the original, if they liked it at all.

Just when things are quieting down in Riverton, everything goes wrong. Inspector Gadget is put on probation. Claw stages a daring escape from prison and plots a new ''Crime of the Century.'' And the mayor unveils a new and improved G2 - an all-robot, all-tech, all-female gadget! Could it get any worse for our hero?

This movie would be okay for young kids. It's so lame, it makes you think, what were they thinking? I mean, they got rid of Matthew Broderick, as well as any rational storyline! Oh well, as I said before, this is targeted at a younger age group than the first inspector...
