Overview

A fearsomely inept alien menace plots to destroy Earth and only one young schoolboy can see through his deceptive guise in Anime Works' release of the deliriously demented Nickelodeon series Invader ZIM. Episodes are presented as originally aired in 1.33:1 full-frame, and audio is offered in either closed-captioned English or Spanish Dolby Digital Stereo with optional Irken subtitles (the language spoken by our would-be conqueror). As would likely be expected from the warped mind of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac creator Jhonen Vasquez, this disc has also been loaded with some pretty bizarre extra features. An exhaustive commentary track including Vasquez, Rikki Simons, Andy Berman, Melissa Fahn, Richard Horvitz, Wally Wingert, Eric Trueheart, Danielle Koenig, Jason Stiff, Bryan Konietzko, Ian Graham, Chris Graham, and Rayfield Angrum certainly does not suffer from extended stretches of silence. An additional pig commentary track will no doubt have viewers reaching for a plate of ribs with a side of bacon, and interviews with the voice cast offer a look behind the scenes while showing how much fun the show would be to voice. A look at the animatronics rounds the extra features out nicely, offering aspiring animators a great peek at the process of creating an animated series.

I've got kids and kids love cartoons (duh), and having kids is a great excuse to watch cartoons as an adult (duh part II). Invader Zim hooked me from the first time I saw it and I'm 33. The artistic style is magnificently bizarre, the story lines are outlandish, and the characters are just incredible. The voice actor (Richard Horvitz) who performed as 'Dagget' in The Angry Beavers lends his talents as Zim. Basically this is the continuous story of an alien invader who was banished from his home planet and is on Earth with the mission of conquering it. He is joined by a robot (G.I.R.) who is capable, yet joyfully oblivious to the doom that Zim wishes to bring upon us humans. Every scheme hatched is usually botched by either the bungling of Zim (helped along by G.I.R.), or foiled by a young man-child paranormal X-Files type alien fanatic named Dib. The dialog is insanely foolish and funny (i.e. Zim talking to a cabbie who has just asked for taxi fare 'You expect me to pay to ride in this filthy machine!? Have you the brain worms!?'). I really have no idea why Nickelodeon pulled the plug on this show, but it's a keeper as evidenced by the large fan following. I'm very happy to see it released on DVD and will soak it up as soon as it becomes available. As G.I.R. often says 'I looove this show!'

Funny as...that place I'm doomed to. Gir is positively the best cartoon character ever created, and the rest create a colorful cast everyone is sure to love.

This cartoon has honestly been one of the many joys of my life, and no one I know really understands why. The show was one of those awesomely over-the-top, insanely humorous programs that you can only fully understand it's genious by watching it. This show definately would not be as great without the outstanding voices and the show would be nothing without it's slightly dark and somewhat graphic humor. But sadly, of course, that is why it was cancelled(or so i've heard). Complaints about the show's unique hilariosity led to concerns towards the future of the show and how it might soon grow too disturbing for nickelodeon viewers...alas, that is why you must buy this one of a kind show on dvd so that, even though you cant watch it on cable, you may still watch it whenever you please in the comfort of your home. And it only costs 21.95!!!

I have no idea why the show was cancelled. 'Twas my..er..pride and joy! The show is hillarious and kinda strange. Just the way I like it. And unlike some other programs, EVERY episode was funny. Now that the DvD is out.. I can watch it with out the commercials and the little orange blob in the bottom right-hand corner. ^_^

I was very eager and excited to finally be able to get this great show on disc, but unfortunately after watching a couple of episodes I'm rather disappointed. Not with the show itelf, but rather with some of the technical aspects of the DVD. First off, there are no English subtitles. The alien language (Irken) subtitles that are on the disc are cute, and would have been a neat bonus to add to a single episode, but to not have proper English subtitles on the disc is ridiculous. Second, and what really is disappointing, is the fact that because many of the episodes have optional 'animatics' (storyboards) that you can switch to during the episode, many DVD players will continually display a 'CAM 1/2' or 'ANGLE 1/2' prompt in the corner of the screen during the entire episode, and there's no way to switch it off. So you're stuck with an annoying menu trigger whether you like it or not. (I own two standalone DVD players, an inexpensive Philips and a high-end Pioneer, and both cannot get rid of the prompt, so I would imagine that many people are having this problem.) Having a commentary for some of the episodes was a very promising feature, but unfortunately there's too many people in the room at the same time, so all too often you're hearing more than one conversation, which winds up being irritating rather than enjoyable. Fewer people would have made the commentary much more listenable. I have to commend the DVD production team for attempting to really assemble a great DVD packed with goodies for us Zim fans, but I think they may have overreached a bit. If it wasn't for the flawed technical issues, this would be a 5 star release. Hopefully the new set will utilize a different menu layout to avoid the problems on Volume 1. But if not, I'll be going back and adding the show to my Tivo recording schedule.

I just loved it. Jhonen makes the funniest cartoon show EVER!! Same goes for his comic JtHM, but this rating isn't about that. Still, Invader Zim is GREAT!! Sorry. Again.

Invader Zim... Regretably canceled by Nick. This, in my own opinion, is basically a demented and more fun version of Tom & Jerry (Not the new ones where the mouse always wins) in which the mentality of people is analyzed. I very highly advise people to see this DvD if they can get their hands on it.
