Overview

Someone at MGM had a lot of fun putting together this double-feature DVD -- but probably not as good a time as we had watching it, especially the first feature, Bruno Ve Sota's Invasion of the Star Creatures (1962). A lighthearted sci-fi-satire, it used to turn up on local television during the mid-'60s, and then disappeared into the black hole of the American International Pictures library late in the decade. The movie -- letterboxed at 1.66-to-1 -- never looked as sharp as it does here. Though that's not saying too much, as Invasion of the Star Creatures wasn't exactly lensed by Freddie Young to start with; there's even a bright white vertical line down the right side of the screen in one extended shot at 26 minutes in. But at least one is getting maximum value for what is here; the sound is mastered at a low volume but is still good and clean, which helps not only in picking up all of the quickly reeled-off gag lines but also the comically over-the-top sound and musical effects. The 16 chapters are more generous and lavish than anything the makers of this movie (credited as an R. I. Diculous presentation) would ever have thought to give it themselves. Denis Sanders' 1973 film Invasion of the Bee Girls (authored by Nicholas Meyer), which appears on the other side of the platter, is a slightly more involved satire, with a somewhat recognizable cast of players. Apart from cult B-actor William Smith, most of its stars turned up regularly in supporting and minor roles in television shows of the era. Still, it's basically a one-joke movie along the lines of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!, only better, about women whose conversion to "bee girls" gives them a lethal sexual appetite, and the trail of dead bodies they leave behind. Letterboxed at 1.85-to-1, the movie is transferred more carefully than it was shot, and the 16 chapters are more than enough to outline the plot, such as it is. The trailers on both movies are included on the disc, and both come with optional English, French, and Spanish subtitles. As to the pairing of the two films, it works but it doesn't -- they're both genre satires, but Invasion of the Star Creatures is unrated (but essentially PG), while Invasion of the Bee Girls is rated R (and with good reason). A more sensible pairing for Star Creatures, if it were possible, would have been Roger Corman's original 1960 Little Shop of Horrors, not only for its similar tone but also because the star of that movie, Jonathan Haze, authored the story for Invasion of the Star Creatures. Each side opens to a simple, easy-to-use menu.
