Vince Papale Mark Wahlberg was a 30-year-old substitute teacher and part-time bartender who had never even played college football. When Coach Vermeil Greg Kinnear made the unprecedented announcement that he would be holding open tryouts for the Philadelphia Eagles, Papale would go against incredible odds to live the dream and experience every fan's biggest fantasy. With a position on the Eagles secured and a new life path forged out of little more than determination and persistence, Papale takes to the field to experience the life-altering rush of running yards as a stadium full of cheering fans burst from their seats to support the hometown hero who proved it's never too late to take control of your own destiny.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Legendary Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Vince Papale, beautifully played by Mark Wahlberg in what may be his best screen work to date, springs to life in this powerful if predictable hit. A 30-year-old fan whose previous football experience has been limited to the sandlots of South Philly, former teacher and part-time bartender Papale is recruited in 1976 by Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil (Greg Kinnear). Overcoming his lack of experience and relatively advanced age, Vince makes the team by dint of his iron will and unceasing effort, ultimately winning over his skeptical teammates and leading them to victory while earning the love of barmaid Janet Cantrell (Elizabeth Banks). Director Ericson Core and screenwriter Bran Gunn stress Vince’s struggle to stay focused despite discouragement from the other players, who think his recruitment nothing more than a Vermeil publicity stunt. Although the film plays out along the familiar lines of other underdog sports stories, its near veracity gives it an extra kick. Papale himself figures prominently in the DVD’s supplemental features -- a 28-minute featurette titled “Becoming Invincible: The Story of Vince Papale” -- as well as audio commentary in which he interacts with producer Mark Ciardi and scriptwriter Gann. Disney was wise to involve him so extensively: You can’t help but admire Papale’s passion, spirit, and obvious love of life. The featurette shows him, wide-eyed and beaming, shooting candid on-set footage with a handheld video camera. Referring to the thrill of having his story immortalized on film, he is heard saying, “I wish I could bottle this.”

    Girl jumps on bandwagon...

This story was a little too hollywood for me. It seems like everything fell into his lap. You could tell from the get go he was going to make it....And isnt it funny, that he, an out of work part time bartender, works in a sleazy, dirty, depressing bar that nobody but absolute alcoholics and degenerates hang around in works along side this 10 rated hot lookin football loving chick, that until he got on the 6 o'clock news wouldnt give him the time of day. The minute he started making it, she sent him gifts, and she was on the money train! The whole story was that, and no one was behind him. None of the players were until the end. It was always "so if this your last game with the Eagles", we still love you" he always heard from his friends. Then it turns back into a love story. Was this a love story or a football story? What I do know, I could tell every turn in the movie. It was to predictable. This movie is not one of his better projects. Hes so much a better actor.

Perhaps the best movie I saw in 2006!

This movie was a sports story that I was not familiar with. Even though a few changes were made regarding the true story of Vince Papale, the heart of his story was kept intact. The movie dialogue was very well written. You do not even have to be a Philadelphia Eagles fan to enjoy this movie. Mark Wahlberg does a great job playing Vince Papale! It was also nice to see Greg Kinear portray Dick Vermeil as the new Philadelphia Eagles couch. A friend told me that the 28 minute Documentary about Vince Papale was every bit as good as the movie itself. As a result, I will have to buy this DVD shortly.

    Invincible one of Disney's Finest

Vince Papale's story is legend in Ealges and NFL lore. Disney, with Miracle, The Rookie, and Remember the Titans under their belt, took on this legendary story of Papale's rise from the South Philly streets to the Eagles lineup. Wahlberg's portrayal of #83 is wonderful and Kinnear's Vermeil job is great as well. The film captures the true feelings of the Eagles faithful in the blue-collar area of the city and, despite it being gone, took on the Vet digitally and does a good job with that too. For any sports, football, or diehard Birds fan, this one is just for you. E-A-G-L-E-S...EAGLES!!!
