Good, Wholesome Old School Marvel with a New Look!

"Iron Man: Armored Adventures: Complete Season 1" is a pretty entertaining DVD set for me.

The animation style is drawings assembled by computer, so I guess that's still 2-D animation. They put all the money into the super powered Iron Man scenes, which always look GREAT; and they still had some leftover to make the mundane, secret identity scenes look pretty good.

This is a decent DVD set for kids and adult fans. There is no bad language that I can think of, and no questionable content. This DVD set is more wholesome than the two Iron Man movies starring Robert Downey Jr.!

The series starts out a little sluggishly, with some poor editing choices that do not maximize the excitemtent, but by the end of the first disc, the Whiplash episode, all systems are GO, and the series is a lot better on the rest of the four discs in total.

They have a lot of interesting twists to the Iron Man story, like basing Tony Stark, Pepper, and Rhodey as high school friends, so they can try to work the Spider-man/Peter Parker angle. It works out pretty well, though some plot holes need to be forgiven. Basically, to inherit his father's fortune Tony Stark must finish high school, which (like Peter Parker/Spider-man) is usually in conflict with being a super hero fighting bad guys.

The villains are pretty well written, and the visuals are pretty consistently awesome.

There is an overly long sub-plot about the Mandarin, which is uneven, sometimes good, sometimes illogical.

Fortunately, it is very entertaining to see the little twists involved with the many Marvel characters that adult fans will recognize and new fans will still enjoy without recognizing them from the Marvel comics and movies.

I am a little confused about the widescreen aspect. My set is full-screen on my non-widescreen TV, though it is only noticeable in a few shots on every disc that the full screen is cutting off most of the subject on the left and right. But I don't see any official FULL SCREEN version labeled for sale for this set anywhere or on my copy, only the Widescreen seems to be advertised. Oh, well, it is an enjoyable DVD set which I heartily recommend in Full Screen or Widescreen. I like it so much that I would buy it again in Widescreen if I was sure that it would be different from what I already own.
